В феврале 2019 года израильская компания SpaceIL успешно вывела на орбиту Луны космический аппарат «Берешит». Он должен был стать самым первым частным аппаратом, совершившим мягкую посадку на земной спутник. Среди многочисленного космического оборудования внутри него была капсула с тихоходками — крошечными организмами, которые обладают способностью выживать даже в самых суровых окружающих условиях. К сожалению, конструкция не смогла вовремя затормозить перед посадкой и разбилась со скоростью 500 километров в час. Удар был настолько сильным, что аппарат разлетелся на части. Чтобы остаться в живых, тихоходки замедляют обмен веществ, потеряв 95% объема воды в организме. Науке известно о существовании 1265 видов тихоходок (в том числе и ископаемых), и некоторые из них способны вырабатывать вещества, которые не дают им замерзнуть. Некоторые производимые ими белки способны защищать каждую клетку их организма.

Когда тихоходка лишается жидкости, размер ее тела уменьшается вдвое, а ноги исчезают. Это состояние называется криптобиозом, и крошечные создания пребывают в нем до тех пор, пока окружающие условия не станут более благоприятными. По мнению ученых, взрослые тихоходки могут выживать при температуре от -272 до 150 градусов Цельсия. Также они могут выдерживать высокие уровни радиации.

Есть ли жизнь на Луне
Если тихоходки настолько живучие, может, они выжили после крушения аппарата «Берешит» и прямо сейчас размножаются на Луне? По мнению ученых, они вполне могли пережить разрушение устройства, но в лунных условиях их жизнь была бы недолгой.
В ходе одного из исследований ученые оценили живучесть тихоходок вида Hypsibius dujardini при столкновении с песком со скоростью 3000 километров в час. При такой скорости они погибли, но при 2600 километрах в час и менее им удалось уцелеть.

Однако тихоходок на Луне может быстро убить температура и отсутствие воды. Днем на естественном спутнике Земли может составлять +120 градусов. Ночью же температура падает до -160 градусов Цельсия. Если учесть, что день и ночь на Луне длятся очень долго, у тихоходок остаются минимальные шансы на выживание.
