Как уже было сказано выше, несмотря на нынешнее глобальное потепление, на Земле были гораздо более теплые периоды. Особенно сильно разница была заметна в Антарктиде. Например, 90 млн лет назад на континенте росли хвойные деревья, папоротники, цветковые растения и прочая флора и фауна. Также ранее ученые выяснили, что 50 млн лет назад в Антарктиде жили гигантские птицы, которых ученые назвали “птицами ужаса”
Одна из причин теплого климата в Антарктиде заключалась в том, что океанические течения переносили теплую воду с экватора и омывали ею периметр континента. Впоследствии эти течения были заблокированы антарктическим циркумполярным течением, которое еще называется течением Западных Ветров. Это холодное поверхностное океаническое течение протяженностью до 30 тысяч километров и шириной до 2,5 тысячи километров.
До того как теплая вода перестала омывать Антарктиду, высокогорья континента имели ледяную шапку, а в низинах росли пышные леса, которые зимой покрывались снегом. Наличие лесов на древней Антарктиде косвенно говорит о том, что континент имел обилие больших рек, так как им нужен дождь, источником которого являются реки.

Антарктида имела горные реки
Пробурить лед, который скапливался в Антарктиде в течение миллионов лет, чтобы взять образцы грунта, является сложной задачей. Поэтому исследователи, сотрудники Бременского университета, решили поступить иначе. Они бурили осадочные породы возле побережья, а именно — в море Амундсена. Для удаления льда был задействован ледокол Polarstern.
В результате ученые обнаружили слой минеральных отложений толщиной до 24 метров, о чем авторы работы сообщают в издании журнале Science Advances. Состав минералов сильно отличается от тех, которые встречаются в близлежащих районах Западной Антарктиды. По мнению исследователей, они были перенесены из Трансантарктических гор, которые разделяют Антарктиду на две части. То есть древняя река стекала с гор и впадала в море Амундсена. Это значит, что ее протяженность составляла около 1500 километров или даже больше, если она извивалась.
Надо сказать, что это не такой уж большой показатель по нынешним временам. Например, длина Амазонки составляет 7100 км, а Нила — 6670 км. Река Лена, самая длинная река в России, имеет длину 4400 км.
