Более того, метан не может длительное время пребывать в атмосфере. Причина заключается фотодиссоциации, то есть распаде молекулы под воздействием света звезды. Поэтому постоянное присутствие в атмосфере метана говорит о наличии его стабильного источника. Например, на Земле большое количество метана образуется в результате биологической активности. Соответственно, экзопланета с метаном в атмосфере заслуживает повышенного внимания с точки зрения поиска жизни на ней. Откуда берется метан в космосе
Метан в Солнечной системе встречается часто, хотя и не в большом количестве. Разумеется, биологический источник этот газ имеет только на Земле. Ранее мы рассказывали, что большое количества метана производят пруды и болота. В других уголках Солнечной системы источник метана абиотичен. Его возникновение можно объяснить серпентинизацией, то есть определенными процессами в горных породах, которые сопровождаются выделением газа.
Для серпентинизации необходим минерал оливин, а также вода и углекислый газ. К слову, оливин является распространенным минералом на нашей планете, который сконцентрирован в верхней части мантии. Собственно говорят, он является основным ее компонентом. Кроме того, ученые обнаружили этот минерал на Луне, Марсе и некоторых астероидах.

Газовый гигант с большим количеством метана
При помощи телескопа Джеймса Уэбба ученые НАСА обнаружили на расстоянии 162 световых года от нас планету под названием WASP-80b, которая является газовым гигантом. Она примерно в два раза больше Юпитера, вращается вокруг карликовой звезды возрастом около полутора миллиардов лет. WASP-80b гораздо теплее Юпитера — планета нагрета примерно до 550 градусов Цельсия. Напомним, что температура Юпитера составляет около 112 градусов по Цельсию.
Казалось бы, если WASP-80b является газовым гигантом, то жизни на нем быть не может, во всяком случае, такой как на Земле. Однако на таких планетах не может быть и серпентинизации, так как нет оливина или любых других пород — они состоят только из газа. Поэтому, даже если отбросить различные фантастические варианты существования жизни на планете, найти источник метана все равно для ученых очень важно.

Надо сказать, что метан вообще редко удается найти в атмосфере экзопланет. Поэтому каждое обнаружение имеет в настоящее время большое значение для науки.
Как ученые обнаружили экзопланету с метаном
Особого внимания заслуживает сама технология, которая была использована для обнаружения планеты. Дело в том, что даже мощный телескоп, такой как Джеймса Уэбба, не способен увидеть WASP-80b. По словам ученых, это эквивалентно обнаружению человеческого волоса с расстояния более 14 км.
Обнаружить же WASP-80b удалось благодаря анализу совокупного света звезды и планеты в различных ситуациях, таких как, например, затмения. Анализ выполнен при помощи JWST-спектроскопии. Это новый подход, и, возможно он позволит обнаруживать метан на планетах, которые уже были исследованы ранее. Проще говоря, метан может оказаться более распространенным газом, чем предполагалось. А значит ученым придется изменить представление о метане как о маркере жизни на планете.

Новое исследование позволит ученым лучше понять как химия и физика работают в условиях, отличающихся от земных. К тому же, обнаружение экзопланет с метаном позволяет лучше изучить Солнечную систему. Но и это еще не все. По словам ученых, измеряя количество метана и воды на планете, они смогут получить информацию о соотношении атомов углерода и атомов кислорода. Это соотношение позволит понять где и когда сформировалась планета, например, близко возле своей звезды или на большом расстоянии от нее, после чего мигрировала.
