Boeing 777-200ER 8 марта 2014 года совершал плановый рейс Куала-Лумпур (Малайзия) — Пекин (Китай). Спустя 40 минут после взлета он исчез с экранов радиолокаторов над Южно-Китайским морем. Несколько обломков, о которых мы сказали выше, были обнаружены спустя два года после катастрофы. Геологи из университета Южной Флориды, изучая их фотографии, обратили внимание на ракушки на их поверхностях. По мнению ученых, именно они могут дать подсказку о том, где находится самолет.
Ракушки Lepas anatifera, которые были прикреплены к части крыла, растут каждый день, то есть каждый день на них появляется новый слой панциря. Причем каждый слой содержит информацию о температуре воды, в которой находилась ракушка. Слои ракушек можно сравнить с годовыми кольцами, по которым можно понять не только возраст дерева, но и условия, в которых оно росло в тот или иной год своей жизни. Ранее мы рассказывали о том, что по годовым кольцам учены смогли получить информацию о засухах за последние 1200 лет в США.

Выполнив геохимический анализ панциря ракушек и сравнив его с данными океанографического моделирования, можно проследить путь ракушек, а вместе с ним и траекторию дрейфа деталей самолета, к которым были прикреплены моллюски. Таким образом ракушки могут вывести ученых к месту крушения самолета.

Исследователи предварительно отточили свою технологию на лабораторных ракушках, что позволило получать более точные данные о температурах воды, в которой находились моллюски. Затем они провели предварительное исследование на некоторых молодых ракушках, которые были обнаружены на обломках Боинга.
Как выяснилось, ракушки колонизировали обломки самолета в более теплых водах, где температура воды составляет порядка 27 градуса по Цельсию. Постепенно они перемещались в более холодные воды, где температура воды не превышает 23-24°C. Эта информация согласуется с более ранним моделированием, которое показало, что обломки дрейфовали через Индийский океан из более теплых вод на юг в прохладные воды.

Команда провела моделирование, которое учитывало 50000 условных элементов самолета, попавших в Индийские океан к востоку от Реюньон (расположенному недалеко от острова Мадагаскар). Всех возможных вариантов дрейфа они выбрали пять наиболее вероятных траекторий дрейфа для дальнейшего исследования.
Каждый из виртуальных обломков самолета провел пять месяцев, дрейфуя к западу от 70° восточной долготы, к югу от 20° южной широты. К концу моделирования они достигли острова Реюньон, преодолев 1500 км. Об этом исследователи сообщают в журнале AGU Advances.

По словам исследователей, разработанный ими метод позволит значительно сузить круг поиска. Однако, чтобы получить более точные данные о месте падения самолета, им необходимо получить доступ к более старым ракушкам, а также усовершенствовать свою технологию.
Самое сложное — обнаружить на обломках ракушки, которые колонизировали их сразу после крушения самолета. По мнению ученых, такими могут быть самые крупные ракушки. Остальные закрепились на обломках по мере их дрейфа в океане. Соответственно, они не могут указать место, где, вероятно, находятся обломки.
