В марте 2024 года впервые в истории живому человеку была пересажена свиная почка. Первым пациентом стал 62-летний американец Рик Слэйман, который перенес операцию в Массачусетской больнице общего профиля. У него была терминальная стадия заболевания почек, то есть требующая использования искусственной почки (диализа). Изначально мужчине пересадили человеческую почку, однако операция прошла не совсем удачно, поэтому через несколько лет возникли серьезные осложнения и вновь потребовался диализ. Тогда врачи предложили ему экспериментальную трансплантацию, однако она тоже оказалась неудачной — спустя два месяца после операции мужчина умер.

Операция, проведенная 16 марта, была первой имплантацией свиной почки живому человеку, но уже не первой пересадкой свиных органов человеку в принципе. К сожалению, каждый день во всем мире умирают десятки или даже сотни людей, которые так и не дождались своей очереди. Пересадка же органов животных позволила бы решить проблему нехватки органов.
