На Китай приходится около 16% от всех самоубийств, которые совершаются в мире. Однако в последние годы количество суицидов стало резко снижаться. Ранее эксперты называли сразу несколько причин такой тенденции — от увеличения доходов населения до культурных сдвигов. Возможно, эти факторы действительно имеют значение. Однако недавнее исследование четко показало наличие тесной связи плохого воздуха с количеством самоубийств.
Следует отметить, что еще в 2013 году Китай поставил перед собой задачу по улучшению качества воздуха. Для этого был разработан план действий, ограничивающий промышленные выбросы, а также выбросы от транспортных средств и сжигаемого топлива. При этом исследователи обнаружили что вместе с улучшением воздуха начало снижаться и количество самоубийств. В период с 2010 по 2021 годы уровень самоубийств уменьшился с 10,88 случаев до 5,25 случая на 100 тысяч человек в год, о чем сообщает Китайский центр по контролю и профилактике заболеваний. Но действительно ли оба этих показателя как-то связаны или это просто совпадение?
Чтобы выяснить это, авторы исследования изучили еженедельные данные о качестве воздуха в Китае. Для этого они проанализировали информацию, полученную от 1400 станций мониторинга качества воздуха. При этом они выяснили в какие дни происходило метеорологическое явление, известное как “тепловая инверсия”. При этом явлении загрязненный воздух удерживается вблизи поверхности земли в слое прохладного воздуха, который прижат более горячей полосой, расположенной выше.

Загрязненный воздух влияет на психическое здоровье человека
Сами по себе инверсии длятся недолго — всего несколько часов. Однако они могут повысить среднюю еженедельную концентрацию мелких твердых частиц (PM 2,5) в воздухе на 1%. Сравнив эти данные со статистикой самоубийств, ученые обнаружили, что всплески приходятся как раз на те недели, когда после тепловой инверсии воздух особенно загрязнен. Об этом исследователи сообщают в журнале Nature Sustainability.

Результаты исследования на самом деле не стали большой неожиданностью для ученых. Предыдущие работы показали, что что твердые частицы могут проникать прямо в мозг, и изменять его химический состав всего за сутки.

Кроме того, как мы ранее уже рассказывали, твердые частицы в воздухе вызывают у людей тревогу и депрессию, помимо того, что ухудшают умственные способности. Исследования также показали, что загрязненный воздух способствует экспрессии генов, которые связаны с психическими расстройствами. Все это говорит о том, что качество воздуха негативно влияет не только на физическое, но и психическое здоровье человека, в том числе и психическое состояние. Причем сложно сказать, какой эффект является более негативным.
По оценкам исследователей, повышение качества воздуха в Китае позволило сохранять около 46 тысяч жизней людей всего за четыре года — в период с 2013 по 2017 год. То есть именно на столько уменьшилось количество случаев суицида благодаря улучшению качества воздуха.
