В 70-х годах, задолго до того, как простоты Красной планеты начал бороздить марсоход Кьюриосити, на Марс приземлились два посадочных модуля. Они сделали первые в истории снимки с поверхности планеты, а также провели биологические испытания на марсианской почве, которые должны были выявить наличие жизни в грунте.
В ходе одного из экспериментов, поверхность почвы заливали водой с питательными веществами и радиоактивным углеродом. Смысл эксперимента заключался в том, что микроорганизмы, если они существуют в почве, должны поглотить питательные вещества, матаболизировать, и затем выделить радиоактивный углерод в виде газа. К удивлению ученых, после добавления воды, оборудование аппарата «Викинг-1» зафиксировало радиоактивный газ. Однако последующие контрольные эксперименты показали неоднозначные результаты.

Если бы в почве действительно присутствовали микробы, то увеличения количества питательных вещества с радиоактивным углеродом привело бы к образованию еще большего количества радиоактивного газа. Однако, закачка еще большего количества смеси во второй и третий раз не привели к этому результату.
Тогда ученые предположили, что следы органики на поверхности Марса на самом деле были загрязняющими веществами, то есть занесенными с Земли. Согласно официальной версии, выделение газа было связано с перхлоратом, соединением, которое присутствует в ракетном топливе и фейерверках. Однако есть и другие объяснения странным результатам эксперимента.

По мнению профессора Берлинского технического университета, Дирка Шульце-Макуха, использование воды во время эксперимента было грубой ошибкой. Дело в том, что вода могла убить микробы.

Как сообщается в статье, опубликованной в издании BigThink, на Земле тоже существуют микроорганизмы, которые погибают от воды. Такие микробы обитают в самых экстремальных условиях, например, в соляных породах. Они получают влагу из воздуха, однако вода для них губительна. На Марсе условия, как известно, крайне экстремальные для жизни и очень мало воды. Поэтому, теоретически, там могут жить такие же бактерии, как и на Земле.
Как говорит сам профессор Шульц-Макух, после того, как вас утопил инопланетный робот, вы вряд ли будете голодно. Поэтому второй и третий эксперимент не показал наличие в почве бактерий. По его мнению, марсианская жизнь, возможно, состоит из перекиси водорода, которой заполнены клетки. Такая смесь отлично подходит для марсианских условия, так как имеет меньшую температуру замерзания.

Если это действительно так, то вода убила бы таких микробов. Кроме того, реакция перекиси водорода с органическими молекулами поблизости привела бы к выделению большого количества углекислого газа. Именно это и произошло во время эксперимента на Марсе.

Надо сказать, что относительно жизни на Марсе существует множество различных версий. Согласно одной из них, сама жизнь и погубила Красную планету, но она не исчезла полностью.
