Как не сложно догадаться из названия, эта рыба предпочитает холодную воду, причем она живет на большой глубине в полной темноте, поэтому довольно плохо изучена. Однако биологам удалось поймать это существо тысячи километров от его естественного обитания, а именно — в тропической части Карибского моря. Рыба была обнаружена случайно, когда исследователи ловили тигровых акул у побережья Белиза. Как она здесь оказалось, для ученых остается загадкой, однако некоторые версии на этот счет все же имеются.

Древняя гренландская акула
Сложно себе представить живые существа, которые родилось полтысячи лет назад. Но, как мы сказали выше, они действительно существуют, единственное, встретить их можно лишь за полярным кругом в водах Северной Атлантики. Надо сказать, что рыба достаточно внушительных размеров — ее длина может достигать 6,4 метров, а масса составляет 1 тонну. Впервые этот вид был описан еще в 1801 году.
Надо сказать, что этот вид является не только самым долгоживущим, но также и самым холодолюбивым из всех известных акул. Несмотря на название, ареал обитания у рыбы достаточно широкий. Она обитает на севере Атлантического океана у берегов Гренландии, Исландии, Канады, Дании, Германии, Норвегии, России и США.
Акула может опускаться на глубину до 2200 метров, однако чаще встречается на глубине от 180 до 550 м. Особь, о которой идет речь, была поймана на глубине около 600 метров. Питаются эти существа преимущественно падалью — мертвой рыбой, тюленями, белыми медведями, китами и пр. Однако в случае удачной охоты могут полакомиться и живой добычей.

Но, в отличие от многих других акул, в том числе опасных, о которых мы писали ранее, гренландские акулы не очень хорошие охотники, так как сильно медлительные. Причем медлительность является важной адаптацией к условиям глубокого моря с дефицитом питательных веществ. Можно сказать, что они живут в режиме постоянного энергосбережения.

Гренландская полярная акула была поймана учеными возле кораллового рифа у берегов Белиза было неожиданным. Обнаружив ее, ученые, по понятным причинам, были очень удивлены. Вначале они даже предположили, что перед ними шестижаберная акула, то есть глубоководный хищник, который обитает в теплых водах. Однако впоследствии выяснилось, что им удалось поймать именно гренландскую полярную акулу, о чем сообщается в недавнем исследовании.
Как говорят сами биологи, они сразу обратили внимание, что под поверхностью воды им попалось очень-очень медлительное существо. Акула была похожа на животное, существовавшее в доисторические времена. Очевидно, она действительно очень старая, однако ее возраст точно не известен.

Надо сказать, что о продолжительности жизни этих существ известно вообще не так много, кроме того, что они могут жить сотнями лет. К примеру, в одном из исследований, проведенных в 2016 году, говорится, что эти акулы достигают половой зрелости только к 134 годам.
Как полярная акула оказалась в южном море
После обнаружения полярной акулы в тропических водах, возник вопрос — рыба по какой-то причине мигрировала на юг или выросла здесь, то есть в теплых водах за тысячи километров от места своего обитания? Ученые пока не могут ответить на этот вопрос. Однако существует вероятность того, что на большой глубине в Карибском море живет много полярных гренландских акул, но ранее они просто не попадались на глаза ученым.

В частности, такого мнения придерживается Демиан Чепмен, директор отдела исследований по сохранению акул и скатов в Морской лаборатории Моте. По его мнению, обнаружение гренландской акулы является очередным напоминанием того, что глубоководные моря по сей день очень плохо изучены.

По этой причине ученые периодически открывают новые виды глубоководных акул, о существовании которых ранее вообще не было известно. Напомним, что глубоководные акулы приспособлены к жизни в условиях высокого давления. Поэтому они не могут подниматься на маленькую глубину, в противном случае они сразу же погибают.
