В западной части Антарктиды в результате бурения ледяных кернов глубиной почти 300 метров, ученые обнаружили семь обломков вулканического стекла. Это довольно странная находка, так как никаких извержений вулканов на континенте в тот период времени, которым датирована находка, не происходило. Как сообщается в недавнем исследовании, шесть обломков возникли в 232 году нашей эры, а возраст еще одного составляет вообще 25 тысяч лет. Точный их возраст удалось определить благодаря окружающим слоям льда. Загадку удалось разгадать благодаря анализу химического состава обломков — они возникли вообще на другом континенте.

Радиоуглеродное датирование останков деревьев, погибших в результате взрыва, показало, что извержение произошло в 232 году. Казалось бы, вопрос можно было закрыть. Однако некоторые ученые стали утверждать, что доказательства могли быть загрязнены. Поэтому извержение на самом деле могло случиться на 200 лет позже.
Теперь же, как сообщается в заявлении ученых, датирование ранее было выполнено верно. Исследование показало, что событие произошло в конце лета-начале осени 232 года нашей эры. Ученые отмечают, что подтверждение даты извержения имеет большое значение для науки, так как позволяет изучить потенциальное глобальное воздействие вулкана на атмосферу и климат. Загадка вулканического стекла в Антарктиде
В своем исследовании ученые обращают внимание на одну интересную деталь — из семи обнаруженных стеклянных обломков, только шесть возникли 1800 лет назад. Возраст одного обломка составляет, как было сказано выше, 25 тысяч лет, при этом он принадлежит тому же вулкану. Отсюда можно сделать вывод, что подобное событие уже происходило раньше, однако все обломки были обнаружены на одной и той же глубине.
По мнению ученых, древний обломок стекла находился долгое время возле вулкана. В момент же извержения 232 года он был выброшен в атмосферу и приземлился вместе с другими осколками на территории Антарктиды.
