Мозг — самый сложный и малоизученный орган человека. Как правило, при его исследовании ученые концентрируют внимание на сером веществе. Однако половину мозга занимает белое вещество. Интерес к серому веществу вполне объясним, так как оно состоит из клеточных тел-нейронов, то есть из тел нервных клеток. Именно эти клетки выполняют вычислительные операции, которые позволяют нам мысли, разговаривать, обрабатывать информацию, получаемую из окружающей среды, обучаться и т.д. Белое же вещество состоит из пучков нервных волокон, которые соединяют разные области серого вещества. То есть белое вещество, фактически, выполняет второстепенную функцию. Какую еще функцию выполняет белое вещество
Сотрудники Университета Вандербильта в недавнем исследовании использовали магнитно-резонансную томографию (фМРТ) для наблюдения за изменениями в белом веществе во время выполнения добровольцами различных задач. Задания были довольно простыми, например, добровольцев просили просто шевелить пальцами.
Напомним, что фМРТ использует магнитный резонанс для построения изображения мозга, а также добавляет к нему так называемый BOLD-сигнал. Это позволяет получить представление не как о структуре мозга, так и активности отдельных его участков, в которых усиливается кровоснабжение и происходит насыщение кислородом.
Надо сказать, что ранее ученые не уделяли внимания сигналам белого вещества, так как они слабее и их сложно обнаружить при помощи фМРТ или другого оборудования. В недавнем же исследовании авторы работы просили участников эксперимента длительное время продолжать выполнять одни и те же действия. Это позволило исследователям обнаружить паттерны и закономерности, которые можно измерить.

Ученые обнаружили активность белого вещества при помощи фМРТ
В результате ученые обнаружили в белом веществе BOLD-сигналы. То есть аппарат показал насыщение кислородом отдельных участков белого вещества. Как отмечают сами исследователи, это были явные сигналы, то есть индикатор активности мозга, а не просто фоновый шум.
Обнаруженные сигналы говорит о том, что активность мозга, в том числе и белого вещества, увеличивается во время выполнения задач. Однако исследователи пока не знают и не могут сказать, что именно происходит в белом веществе. Единственное, что известно наверняка — белое вещество генерирует мощный сигнал. Об этом авторы работы сообщают в журнале PNAS.
В сером веществе BOLD-сигналы означают усиление кровотока и насыщение мозга кислородом, в котором нуждаются активные участки. Ученые предполагают, что то же самое происходит и с клетками белого вещества. Возможно, это связано с тем, что во время работы мозг расходует больше кислорода.
