О существовании древнего мегалитического сооружения Стоунхендж на юго-западе Англии известно каждому, так как это один из самых знаменитых археологических памятников в мире. Однако мало кто знает, что на восточном побережье страны есть еще один не менее интересный доисторический памятник, известный как Сихендж. Его обнаружили сравнительно недавно — в 1998 году и назвали по аналогии со Стоунхенджем. Сооружение представляет собой тоже круг, но состоящий не из камней, а 55 высоких дубовых столбов. Внутри «круга» находился большой дубовый пень. Столбы датированы XXI веком до нашей эры, то есть их возраст составляет около 4000 лет.

Древнее сооружение Сихендж
Сихендж, известный еще как Холм I, был обнаружен случайно, благодаря приливной эрозии, которая оголила памятник на одном из пляжей английского графства Норфолк. Дубовые столбы образовывали овал размером 6 на 7 метров. В центре, как уже было сказано выше, находился большой пень, причем он был перевернут.
Изначально сооружение было построено на солончаках вдали от моря на участке с песчаными дюнами и илистыми отмелями. Постепенно на месте Сихенджа образовывался слой торфа, который в конечном итоге полностью поглотил столбы и тем самым позволил им отлично сохраниться в течение тысяч лет.
Надо сказать, что всего в 100 метрах от Сихенджа археологи обнаружили еще одно похожее сооружение, получившее название Холм II. Изучив кольца на бревнах обоих сооружений, ученые пришли к выводу, что они были построены в одно и то же время — примерно в 2049 году до нашей эры, то есть через несколько сотен лет после того, как был создан Стоунхендж.

Для чего был построен Сихендж
Есть много версий о предназначении Сихенджа. Основная из них гласит, что две конструкции использовались для похорон выдающихся людей, таких как местные вожди или воины. Согласно другой версии, сооружения использовались для так называемых “небесных захоронений”. То есть тела мертвых помещались внутрь круга, чтобы их расклевывали и уносили птицы.
Однако в недавнем исследовании, опубликованном в журнале GeoJournal, доктор Дэвид Нэнс, сотрудник из Абердинского университета, выдвинул другую теорию. Чтобы выяснить предназначение сооружения, он использовал сочетание климатических, экологических, астрономических и биологических данных, а также обратился к региональному фольклору.
В результате исследователь пришел к выводу, что Сихендж был построен в очень холодный климатический период. Зимы тогда были очень суровыми, а весна наступала гораздо позже, чем сейчас. Причем этот период длился довольно долго. Поэтому, скорее всего, сооружения использовались для ритуалов, направленных на возвращение теплой погоды.

Ритуалы и жертвоприношения в древней Британии и Ирландии
Дэвид Нэнс обратил внимание на то, что все столбы были срублены весной и расположены таким образом, чтобы “бревна были совмещены с восходом солнца в день летнего солнцестояния”. Согласно местному фольклору, летнее солнцестояние было датой, когда кукушка, символ плодородия, прекращала петь и возвращалась в Потусторонний мир. Вслед за уходом кукушки приходило лето и теплая погода.
Таким образом, оба памятника должны были отразить климатическую угрозу. Однако у этих сооружений были разные роли. Холм I напоминал птичье жилище, описанное в фольклоре. Его задача состояла в том, чтобы поддерживать пение не оперившейся кукушки. Это, согласно древнему преданию, позволяло продлевать лето.
Перевернутый дубовый пень в центре напоминал дупло кукушки в потустороннем мире. В “мифе о запертой кукушке” описывается ритуал, во время которого птенца кукушки помещали в терновый куст, а взрослую птицу “замуровывали”, чтобы продлить лето.

Также Дэвид Нэнс сообщает о том, что правителей приносили в жертву каждые восемь лет в день Самайне (ныне Хэллоуин). Этот день совпадает с восьмилетним циклом Венеры. “Светильники в “Холме II”, которые, как считалось, держат гроб, ориентированы на восход солнца в Самайн в 2049 году, когда Венера еще была видна” — сообщает исследователь. Вполне возможно, что теория действительно верна, однако спустя 4 тысячи лет точно выяснить это уже невозможно.
