Однако, как сообщают археологи, этот принцип работает не всегда. Некоторые тела англосаксов, идентифицированные как мужские, были похоронены в женской одежде. В то же время в могилах воинов, где содержались мужские артефакты, по какой-то причине были похоронены женщины. Древние могилы трансгендеров — археологические “неточности”
Так как ученые не могли найти убедительного объяснения странным захоронениям, в своих исследованиях и отчетах старались их просто не упоминать. Как сообщают специалисты, представление о древнем английском обществе и принципы гендерной идентичности основаны на стандартах XIX века. Поэтому вероятность существования трансгендеров, нетрадиционная сексуальная ориентация которых подчеркивалась даже после смерти, учеными исключалась.
Некоторые захоронения бросают вызов представлениям историков об англосаксонской гендерной идентичности
Исправить ситуацию решил британский исследователь Джеймс Дэвисон, кандидат наук по истории Средневековья, сотрудник Ливерпульского университета. Для этого он детально изучил особенности таких захоронений. Речь идет об одиннадцати могилах, датированных V-VIII веками нашей эры, которые были обнаружены на дохристианских кладбищах. В отчетах эти захоронения обозначены как “неточности”.
Могила трансвестита седьмого века
В одной из могил, датированной примерно 600 годом нашей эры, был похоронен мужчина в возрасте 35-40 лет. Причем в отчете о раскопках написано, что тело принадлежит “определенно мужчине”. Однако рядом с ним был обнаружен костяной гребень, серебряно-позолоченная брошь, серебряная булавка, бусы, серебряный кулон, пряжка, нож и набор железных ключей.
Большое количество артефактов говорит о высоком статус человека. Это предположение косвенно подтверждает и глубина могилы, которая составляла 0,61 метра. Для этого периода времени могила была очень глубокой, а значит ее рыли уважаемому человеку, поэтому не жалели сил.

Исследование зубов показало, что мужчина страдал кариесом. Вполне возможно, что его причиной стала диета с большим содержанием сахара. В то же время на зубах отсутствуют следы гипоплазии эмали, которая появляется при недостатке питания, характерном в то время для многих людей.
Как сообщает издание The Conversation, позолоченная брошь, пряжка и серебряная булавка являются предметом женской одежды. Джеймс Дэвисон считает, что могила принадлежала богатому мужчине-трансвеститу, который имел достаточно высокое положение в обществе, несмотря на свою нетрадиционную ориентацию. К слову, напомним, что согласно недавних исследований, гены не влияют на сексуальную ориентацию человека.
Захоронение женщины-воина
В другом захоронении, обозначенном тоже как “неточность” обнаружены останки человека в возрасте 35-40 лет. В отчете указано, что останки принадлежат “возможно женщине”. Плохая сохранность не дает стопроцентной уверенности, однако ряд признаков говорит о том, что в этой могиле была похоронена действительно женщина.
Оружие не всегда является признаком мужского захоронения
Эта могила не такая глубокая, но большая, что также говорит о достаточно высоком статусе человека. Исследование зубов показало наличие “окклюзионных трещин”, которые связаны с женскими гормонами, особенно во время беременности. Эти данные подтверждают, что скелет практически наверняка принадлежит женщине. Однако рядом с останками был обнаружен меч, наконечник копья, бронзовый пояс, железные фрагменты пряжки и другие некоторые артефакты, характерные для мужских захоронений.
Интересно, что оружие тоже говорит о высоком статусе воина. Конечно, ученые уже никогда не смогут узнать о человеке, похороненном в этой могиле. Но Джеймс Дэвисон также отнес ее к захоронениям трансгендерам. Если он не ошибается, ученые смогут включить эти захоронения в свои исследования. Кроме того, новый взгляд раскрывает неизвестный аспект ранней англосаксонской культуры.
