Он, как известно, является важным элементом для возникновения жизни, однако до последнего моменты было неясно откуда он берется — поднимается на поверхность из океана или имеет другой источник, например, попадает из космоса. Теперь же ученым удалось ответить на этот вопрос, однако загадка до конца все равно не раскрыта.

Чтобы выяснить где находится источник углерода на спутнике Юпитера, группа ученых из США воспользовалась данными, полученными телескопом Джеймс Уэбб. Это позволило создать карту CO2 на поверхности спутника. Как выяснилось, наибольшее скопление этого газа находится в районе Тара Реджио, обширной территории, где множество хребтов и трещин.
Напомним, что Европа считается самым гладким объектом Солнечной системы. Поэтому хаотический рельеф на участке Тара Реджио можно считать аномалией, а не нормой. Считается, что на этом участке теплая вода поднимается на поверхность, в результате чего растапливает лед. Затем вода повторно замерзает, в результате чего и образуется неровный рельеф.
В одном из недавних исследований, ученые проанализировали данные с телескопа Джеймс Уэбб, чтобы выяснить мог ли углекислый газ возникнуть не из океана спутника, а другого источника, например, упавшего астероида. В результате они пришли к выводу, что углерод возник именно из недр Европы. Однако оставалось неясным в каком виде он оказался на поверхности — сразу газообразном или в виде камнеобразных карбонатных минералов, которые впоследствии превратились в CO2 под воздействием радиационного излучения.

В районе Тара Реджио также была обнаружена поваренная соль, из-за которой этот участок не настолько белоснежный, как остальная часть спутника. По мнению ученых, она могла оказаться на ледяной поверхности так же, как и углерод, то есть из океана. Это значит, что на каких-то участках вода должна вырываться наружу, как, например, на другом спутника Сатурна — Энцеладе.
В ходе второго исследования, проведенного на основе данных с того же телескопа,
ученые НАСА пытались обнаружить эти гейзеры воды или летучих газов, которые вырываются на поверхность и переносят углерод с из глубин океана на поверхность. В результате они подтвердили результаты первого исследования — углерод возник из недр спутника. Однако никаких шлейфов воды обнаружено не было. Об этом авторы работы сообщают в журнале Science.
Скорее всего, источник углерода на поверхности спутника останется загадкой до тех пор, пока Европа не будет тщательно исследована космическими аппаратами “Юпитер Джус” и “Европа Клипер”. Первый был запущен Европейским космическим агентством еще в апреле нынешнего года, а миссия NASA “Европа Клипер” запланирована на октябрь следующего года.

Однако результаты исследований будут получены не скоро. Например, аппарат “Юпитер Джус” пролетит мимо Европы только в 2032 году. Он также исследует два других спутника Юпитера — Ганимед и Каллисто, на которых тоже был обнаружен углерод. Главная же цель обеих миссий — выяснить, есть ли на спутниках условия для поддержания жизни.
Но ученые предупреждают, что на спутниках экстремальные условия, поэтому даже если жизнь будет обнаружена, это будут примитивные микробы. Ни о какой разумной жизни речи быть не может. Хотя, не все с этим утверждением согласны. По мнению некоторых специалистов, в океане Европы могут жить существа, напоминающие осьминогов. Кто знает, вполне возможно, что они обладают разумом. Но это предположение скорее относится к фантастике, а не науке.
