Глаза так устроены, что они всегда должны оставаться влажными. В противном случае возникает усталость и раздражение зрения, глаза при этом краснеют и возникает ощущение “песка”. Чтобы глаза не успевали пересыхать, моргать приходится часто. Из-за этого человек во время бодрствования в среднем проводит от трех до восьми процентов времени с закрытыми глазами. Правда, мы этого не замечаем, так как затуманивание зрения происходит на доли секунды.
Как моргание влияет на работу мозга
Учитывая такую высокую частоту закрытия и открытия век, ученые предположили, что этот рефлекс может выполнять и какую-то другую функцию, и, возможно, влияет на обработку визуальной информации. Чтобы выяснить это, они провели исследование, к которому привлекли двенадцать добровольцев — мужчин и женщин в возрасте около 22 лет. Все участники эксперимента обладали нормальным зрением.
О целях исследования людям не сообщали, чтобы добиться наиболее объективных результатов. В ходе эксперимента их попросили рассмотреть изображения, представляющие собой решетчатые узоры, и определить в какую сторону направлены линии — по часовой стрелке или против. В момент, когда добровольцы выполняли задание, айтрекер Dual Purkinje Image с высокой точностью отслеживал движения глаз.

В ходе эксперимента участники в одном случае должны были моргать, рассматривая изображения на мониторе, а в другом случае — моргать до появления изображения. При этом ученые контролировали время и условия моргания, чтобы убедиться, что наблюдаемые эффекты связаны именно с морганием, а не другими переменными.
После анализа полученных данных исследователи обнаружили, что когда участники моргали во время выполнения задачи, они более эффективно определяли положение линий на картинке. Эта эффективность выражалась как в точности ответов, так и чувствительности к визуальным деталям. Об этом исследователи сообщают в издании журнале Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Ученые предположили, что моргание глазами тоже обеспечивает некоторую дискретность зрения, которая улучшает восприятие визуальной картинки. Во время быстрого закрытия и открытия век происходит резкие изменения яркости. Эти изменения сбрасывают, или переформатирует визуальную информацию, которая поступает через зрение в мозг, в результате чего новая информация обрабатывается более эффективно.

Чтобы проверить эту гипотезу, исследователи, провели еще один эксперимент, в ходе которого искусственно имитировали эффект моргания. То есть они приглушали яркость, но сами участники эксперимента при этом не моргали. В итоге их производительность обработки визуального изображения была такой же эффективной, как и при моргании. Это значит, что на обработку изображения влияет не само движение веками, а “сброс” визуальной информации.
