В этой области уже удалось добиться неплохих результатов, однако группа исследователей из Университета Брауна пришла к выводу, что все предыдущие усилия, возможно, тщетны, так как паразиты, вызывающие малярию, мутировали. Они не обнаруживаются стандартными тестами и устойчивы к существующим методам лечения. Это может увеличить количество случаев заболевания и смертность от малярии уже в ближайшее время.

Чем опасна малярия
Малярией называется инфекционное заболевание, возбудителем которого является паразит рода Plasmodium. Переносчики этих паразитов — самки комаров рода Anopheles. При укусе зараженного комара, паразиты попадают вначале в кровеносное русло человека, а затем в клетки печени. Малярийные комары распространены повсеместно, но особенно сильно в тропических регионах.
Малярия проявляется лихорадкой с сильным повышением температуры, ознобом, недомоганием, слабостью и головной болью. Впоследствии к этим симптомам добавляется кашель, нарушения со стороны нервной системы, мышечные боли и пр. В конечном итоге малярия может привести к серьезным нарушениям функций внутренних органов и центральной нервной системы, что может стать причиной летального исхода.

Малярийные комары распространены во всем мире
В Африке для диагностики малярии используют экспресс-тесты, которые обнаруживают в крови определенные белки паразитов. Тесты могут обнаружить малярию, даже если у пациента нет симптомов. Однако мутировавшие паразиты не имеют генов, которые отвечают за белок. Исследование показало, что только 8,2% устойчивых к лекарствам паразитов имеют гены, экспрессирующие белок, позволяющий их обнаружить при помощи тестов. Об этом исследователи сообщают в журнале Nature Microbiology.
Малярия, которая не поддается лечению
Лечение малярии, рекомендованное Всемирной организацией здравоохранения, представляет собой комбинированную терапию, включающую лекарственные соединения на основе артемизинина. Они обычно эффективны в плане предотвращения смертности и сокращения распространения инфекции. Мутации же, обнаруженные учеными, обладают устойчивость к артемизинину.
