Муравьев можно назвать одними из самых социальных насекомых. Своей социальной организацией и способностями они не перестают удивлять ученых уже на протяжении многих лет. На этот раз в поле зрения исследователей попали муравьи-плотники обитающие во Флориде США. Свое название они получили из-за необычного устройства гнезда. Эти насекомые не делают привычных муравейников, а строят гнезда в древесине, буквально прорубая в ней проходы своими челюстями. Причем свои гнезда они отчаянно защищают от других муравьев, поэтому часто получают в боях различные увечья. В ходе недавнего исследования, ученые обнаружили, что раненых сородичей они не бросают умирать, а оказывают им медицинскую помощь, в том числе и “хирургическую”.

Как муравьи лечат друг друга
Впервые ученые обнаружили, что муравьи способны оказывать друг другу медицинскую помощь в 2023 году. Тогда команда исследователей, наблюдавшая за африканскими муравьями Megaponera analis, заметила, что насекомые лечат инфицированные раны своих сородичей при помощи антисептического вещества, которое сами вырабатывают в своих железах.
У флоридских муравьев-плотников нет таких желез, поэтому ученые хотели выяснить, как они оказывают медицинскую помощь своим собратьям без антисептика. В ходе исследования авторы рассмотрели два типа ран на ногах муравьев — рваные раны на бедре и раны ниже на “большеберцовой кости”.

Как выяснилось, для лечения рваных ран на бедре, муравьи сначала ее очищают ртом, а затем ампутируют конечность, многократно ее кусая. Причем процедура производится очень аккуратно, в результате чего на удаление ноги муравьям приходится тратить около 40 минут. Если же муравьям нужно вылечить рану большеберцовой кости, они ее просто очищают.
Эффективна ли “медицина” муравьев
Учитывая все вышесказанное, возникает главный вопрос — насколько эффективна “медицина” муравьев? Действительно ли она помогает им выжить после серьезных травм? Как сообщается в исследовании, опубликованном в журнале Current Biology, операции значительно повышают выживаемость особей.
Например, показатели выживаемости при травмах бедра без операции составляет менее 40%. Хирургическое же вмешательство повышает этот показатель до 90-95%. Без очистки ран “большеберцовой кости” выживаемость муравьев не превышает 15%. После очистки же ран выживают до 75% муравьев.

Интересно, что муравьи различают тип травм, и используют разные стратегии их лечения. По мнению исследователей, муравьи ампутируют ногу исключительно при травме бедра, но не при других ранах. И этому есть логичное объяснение. Изучив микро-КТ-сканы муравьев, авторы работы обнаружили, что повреждение мышц в бедренной кости, перекачивающих гемолимфу (аналог крови), замедляет кровообращение. Это дает муравьям достаточно времени для того, чтобы ампутировать конечность до того, как зараженная гемолимфа распространиться по всему организму.
На “голенях” же муравьев мало мышечной ткани, поэтому инфекции могут распространяться быстрее. То есть, пока муравьи ампутируют конечность, инфекция успеет распространиться, а значит в ампутации не нет никакого смысла. Поэтому насекомые сосредотачиваются только на очистке ран.

Как говорят сами исследователи, муравьи умеют диагностировать рану, определять загрязнена она или нет, и лечить ее наиболее эффективным способом, который им доступен. С этой “медицинской системой” может соперничать только человеческая медицина. Правда, эти муравьи не являются единственным видом после, кроме людей, который умеет лечить раны.
