По данным Конвенции ООН по борьбе с опустыниванием (КБО ООН), ежегодно в атмосферу выбрасывается порядка 2 миллиардов тонн песка и пыли. Для сравнения, примерно столько же весят 350 Великих пирамид в Гизе. Из них от 60 до 200 миллионов тонн минеральной пыли выбрасывается из пустыни Сахара и разносится по планете.
Когда пылевое облако накрывает какой-либо регион, окрашивает в нем небо в желтовато оранжевый цвет из-за мельчайших частичек песка. При этом может сильно ухудшиться видимость. Причина в том, что воздух насыщен мелкодисперсной пылью, образующей дымку.

Но почему эта пыль разносится по планете? Причина в сезонных изменениях ветра. В пустыне Сахара он начинает сильно усиливаться и достигает пика в конце июня-середине августа. Мощный ветер поднимает в воздух большие массы песка. Более крупные частицы при этом быстро падают на землю, а самые мелкие и легкие путешествуют на тысячи километров.
Почему пыль переносится на большие расстояния
Во время пылевых бурь, пыль поднимается на большую высоту в тропосферу, где возникает так называемый Сахарский воздушный слой, который представляет собой шлейф очень сухого и пыльного воздуха. В нем на 50% меньше влаги, чем обычно в атмосфере над тропическими регионами.
