Еще одним ключевым отличием нового исследования является использование химически, а не генетически модифицированных эмбриональных стволовых клеток и создание модели, более похожей на настоящий человеческий эмбрион. Авторы нового исследования также отмечают, что в ходе предыдущих попыток создания подобной модели отсутствовал ряд важных типов клеток, присутствующих в эмбрионах на ранних стадиях развития в утробе матери в нормальных условиях. Добиться результата удалось, основываясь на более ранних исследованиях, в ходе которых ученые создавали точные модели мышиных эмбрионов без использования оплодотворенной яйцеклетки в качестве основы.

Как ученые создали аналог человеческого эмбриона?

Команда, возглавляемая Джейкобом Ханной из Института Вейцмана в Израиле, создала модели эмбрионов возрастом до 14 дней, что является законным пределом для подобных исследований во многих странах (а также моментом, когда начинают развиваться такие органы, как мозг). Затем исследователи разделили стволовые клетки на три группы, одну из которых оставили в исходном состоянии, а две другие подвергли химическим модификациям, предназначенным для «включения» определенных генов.

В результате в двух группах с химически модифицированными клетками, «включенные» гены стимулировали трансформацию клеток в ткани, необходимые для создания «лабораторного» эмбриона.
