H. mancinella, которое еще известно как манцинелловое дерево, манзинилла и маншинелла, не является исключением. Дерево произрастает в тропических районах юга Северной Америки (включая Флориду) и на севере Южной Америки. Также оно часто встречается на островах Карибского моря.

При контакте с кожей сок моментально вызывает химические ожоги и появление волдырей. Иногда, чтобы получить ожог, даже не обязательно контактировать с деревом. Иногда достаточно просто постоять под ним, особенно, во время дождя. Как сообщают ученые Флоридского университета, взаимодействие с любой частью манцинеллы может закончиться летальным исходом.

Если сок попадает в глаза, он вызывает временную слепоту. Более того, лишиться зрения можно, даже если просто посидеть возле костра, в котором сжигается древесина манцинелла. В таком случае токсичное вещество попадает в глаза вместе с дымом.

Почему же от этого дерева не избавятся, если оно такое опасное? На острове Пуэрто-Рико пытались это сделать еще в 1773 году в связи с королевским указом, который обязывал уничтожить все “деревья смерти”. Однако ни чем хорошим это не закончилось — сок брызгал во все стороны, вызывая ожоги и слепоту у людей, которые пытались избавиться от растений. В итоге дерево решено было оставить, к тому же оно, как уже было сказано выше, защищает береговую зону от эрозии.
