Все тело и голова молоха покрыты шипами, напоминающими шипы роз, а над глазами у нее подобие рогов. Окраска ящерицы красновато-коричневая, но может изменяться от разных факторов, таких как температура окружающей среды, освещение или даже физиологическое состояние рептилии. Несмотря на такой устрашающий вид, молох вряд ли способен напугать человека, так как имеет небольшой размер тела — около 20 сантиметров. Тернистый дьявол — пустынная ящерица
Молох обитает в засушливых кустарниковых местностях и внутренних песчаных пустынях Австралии, с чем и связан такой его необычный вид. Ящерица имеет маленькую, узкую голову и широкое уплощенное тело. На шее у нее имеется подушковидный вырост, который напоминает голову. Поэтому, когда молох чувствует опасность, прячет настоящую голову между лапами, оставляя открытой поддельную с выставленными вперед “рогами”. Вместе с тем ящерица раздувает грудь, чтобы казаться больше.
Тернистый дьявол довольно необычно передвигается — он делает это медленно, держит туловище на вытянутых ногах и почти не касается хвостом земли. Кроме того, ящерица перемещается прерывисто, чтобы сбивать с толку хищников. Такое движение позволяет ящерицам не активировать реакцию преследования и атаки у хищников. То есть хищник с гораздо большей вероятностью бросится в атаку, если добыча быстро бежит.

Надо сказать, что обычным способом молох вообще не пьет. Долгое время считалось, что ящерица просто впитывает влагу через кожу, как это делают амфибии. Однако впоследствии ученые при помощи электронного микроскопа обнаружили, что это не так. На самом деле дождевая вода или роса, попадая на кожу, под действием капиллярных сил устремляется по микроскопическим каналам между чешуйками к краю пасти. Чтобы вода попала в пасть, ящерица совершает жевательные движения челюстями.
Таким образом, молох втягивает воду кожей в рот словно через соломинку. Интересно, что масса ящерицы после соприкосновения с водой может увеличиться на 30%. Таким образом она накапливает запас воды.

Как уже было сказано выше, тернистый дьявол способен менять цвет, что тоже помогает ему приспособиться к окружающей среде. Таким образом ящерица может регулировать температуру тела и обмен веществ. Например утром, когда прохладно, молох имеет более темный коричневый цвет. По мере повышения температуры, цвет становится более светлым. Это позволяет лучше отражать солнечные лучи и не перегреваться. Кроме того, иногда молох использует быстрое изменение цвета для маскировки. К слову, ящерицы вообще большие мастера маскировки.
Чем питается колючий дьявол
Moloch horridus получил название в первой половине XIX века в честь бога человеческих жертвоприношений. Название было навеяно поэмой Джона Мильтона “Потерянный рай”, в которой упомянут ханаанский бог Молох — кровожадный персонаж, требующий детских жертвоприношений.
Видимо, автор названия, натуралист Джон Грей, посчитал, что молохом назвать ящерицу недостаточно, поэтому добавил слово “horridus”. Оно переводится как “грубый”, “дикий” или “ужасный”. Однако на самом деле ящерица совершенно безобидна для человека — она не имеет никакого яда, в отличие от, например, аризонских ядозубов, и не способна причинить вред человеку каким-либо другим способом.

Питается колючий дьявол исключительно муравьями, которых ловит липким языком. Обычно он находит муравьиные дорожки и захватывает насекомых, причем не трогает тех, кто несет большую ношу. Во время своей охоты, ящерица старается не выдыхать воздух вниз, чтобы не отпугнуть насекомых запахом муравьиной кислоты. По оценкам ученых, один молох за день может съесть до нескольких тысяч муравьев.

Надо сказать, что в мире довольно мало ящериц, которые поедают муравьев. Помимо молоха к ним относятся североамериканские жабовидные ящерицы и некоторые круглоголовки. Несмотря на то, что эти виды обитают на разных континентах и живут в разных средах обитания, они схожи между собой как по поведению, так и внешним видом — имеют уплощенные тела, покрытые шипиками, медленно передвигаются и зарываются в песок.
