Уникальная экосистема чернобыльской зоны отчуждения
В 1986 году произошла крупнейшая ядерная катастрофа в мире — взрыв реактора привел к выбросу и заражению огромной территории. Площадь зоны отчуждения, которая подверглась наиболее интенсивному заражению, составляет 2600 квадратных километров. Тем не менее многим животным на этой территории удалось адаптироваться и пережить высокие уровни радиации.
В результате за последние почти 40 лет в чернобыльской зоне образовалась уникальная экосистема. К подобным условиям смогли приспособиться и волки, предоставив ученым уникальную возможность изучить их способность выживать несмотря на накопление большого количества радиоактивных частиц в теле. Среди прочих исследователей, изучением этих животных занялась Кара Лав, биолог-эволюционист и экотоксиколог, сотрудник Принстонского университета.
Чернобыльские волки мутировали
Для наблюдения за волками, на них были надеты ошейники с GPS-трекерами и дозиметрами. Это позволило в реальном времени следить за передвижением каждой отдельной особи, а также получать информацию о воздействии радиации. Как в итоге выяснилось, волки ежедневно подвергались дозе радиации, превышающей 11,28 миллибэр (биологический эквивалент рентгена). Это в 6 раз больше безопасного предела для среднего взрослого человека.
В 2014 году Кара Лав со своими коллегами взяла у волков кровь на анализ, чтобы понять реакцию их организма на радиацию. Напомним, что излучение провоцирует онкологические заболевания. Поэтому волки должны были часто болеть раком, но этого почему-то не происходит. Исследование показало, что у них изменена иммунная система.

Сотрудники Принстонского университета исследуют чернобыльского волка
Иммунитет чернобыльских волков напоминает иммунную систему людей, больных раком, которые прошли курс лучевой терапии, о чем сообщает издание Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology. В ходе исследования ученым даже удалось определить области генома волков, которые, возможно, делают их устойчивыми к онкологическим заболеваниям. Теперь осталось выяснить какие именно мутации происходят в этих участках.
Вполне возможно, что подобной устойчивостью к раку обладают не только волки, но и упомянутые выше собаки, которые живут прямо не территории реактора. Однако их кровь не изучали так, как кровь волков.
Если ученым удастся завершить исследование, полученные знания, возможно, помогут в борьбе с раком среди людей. Известно, что некоторые человеческие генные мутации увеличивают риск развития онкологических заболеваний. Например, наличие генной мутации BRCA, которая передается по наследству, повышает риск развития рака молочной железы. Но, вполне возможно, что этот “сценарий” получится направить в обратную сторону, то есть против заболевания.
