В настоящее время Антарктида не особенно изобилует фауной, так как представляет собой ледяной континент с экстремальным климатом. Больше всего она ассоциируется с безобидными пингвинами, ковыляющими по льдам на побережье. Однако Антарктида не всегда была настолько холодной и безжизненной. Примерно 50 миллионов лет назад континент был зеленым с обилием различных животных и птиц. Среди них было одно страшное существо — двухметровая хищная птица, которую так и назвали — “птица ужаса”, или “ужасник”. Возможно, это был самый свирепый и опасный хищник Антарктиды.

Команда ученых проводила раскопки формации Ла-Месета — отложений эпохи эоцена на острове Сеймур в Антарктиде. Обычно здесь удавалось найти окаменелости мелких млекопитающих, которые часто встречались на острове. В основном это были сумчатые насекомоядные. Также встречались небольшие хищные птицы, но никогда ученые не находили останки крупных хищников.
Однако в какой-то момент исследователи наткнулись на нечто необычное — два окаменелых когтя длиной 8 сантиметров. Они сразу предположили, что когти принадлежат не летающему существу, известному как «птица ужаса». Это название ученые дали птицам вымершего семейства Phorusrhacidae (Фороракосовые). В основном они представляли собой крупных и активных хищников.

Фороракосовые, или форорациды являются вымершими хищными птицами, жившими в период с 62 по 0,1 млн лет назад. Их высота достигала трех метров. Один из самых крупный видов, известный как Titanis walleri, обитал в Северной Америке, пока не вымер 2 миллиона лет назад.
Самый же крупный вид фороракосовых — кленкен. Эта птица вырастала до трех метров и обладала самым крупным черепом среди птиц — 75 сантиметров. Они жили 15 млн лет назад на территории современной Аргентины. Последние же представители фороракосовых вымерли примерно 100 тысяч лет назад.
Предположительно, птицы быстро бегали. Они имели не очень мощную силу укуса, но могли ими бить. Поэтому, скорее всего, фороракосовые догоняли свою добычу и поражали ее оглушительными ударами.

Птицы ужаса вырастали в высоту до трех метров

К сожалению, кроме когтей ученые не нашли других частей скелета. Поэтому точно определить их владельца невозможно. Однако характерные особенности и возраст окаменелостей говорит о том, что хищная птица принадлежала именно к Фороракосовым или близкой к ним группе.
По оценкам ученых, птица имела рост порядка 2 метров, а вес ее составлял около 100 килограммов. Она была свирепым охотником, который питался в основном мелкими и средними позвоночными. Большие когти и крючковатые клювы позволяли им ловить копытных и сумчатых животных, которые населяли остров. Об этом авторы исследователя сообщают в журнале Palaeontologia Electronica.
Ученые предполагают, что птица, которой принадлежали кости, была на вершине пищевой цепочки. Это открытие, по их мнению, меняет понимание раннеэоценовых антарктических континентальных экосистем. Как уже было сказано выше, до этой находки ученые предполагали, что экосистемы не содержали настолько крупных хищников.
