В большинстве случаев A. oligospora потребляет разлагающиеся органические вещества из почвы, например опавшие листья. Однако если гриб начинает испытывать голод, то есть в почве ему недостаточно питательных веществ, он превращается в плотоядного хищника, который охотится на червей нематод. Как сообщается в исследовании, опубликованном в журнале Plos Biology, когда гриб A. oligospora чувствует присутствие червя поблизости, он задействует феромоны, чтобы заманить нематод в свой мицелий. Последние представляют собой сеть микроскопических нитей, расположенных под землей, из которых, собственно, и состоит гриб.
Проще говоря, A. oligospora развил способность использования обонятельной мимикрии. Он выделяет пищевые сигналы и половые феромоны, что заставляет червя ощущать знакомый запах, и самостоятельно направляться в сторону ловушки гриба. Ловушка же очень липкая, в результате чего действуют на нематод как как клей. Когда в нее попадает нематода, ферменты начинают ее переваривать.
Как поясняют исследователи, нематоды производят молекулы, называемые аскарозидами, которые регулируют их поведение и развитие. Считается, что грибы, подобные A. oligospora, обнаруживают сигналы, исходящие от этих червей, после чего распознают их молекулярную структуру и воссоздают ее. Так как создание феромонов — это очень энергозатратный процесс, A. oligospora формирует их только тогда, когда добыча находится рядом возле ловушки.

Смогут ли черви защититься от грибов
Парадокс заключается в том, что нематоды тоже способны быстро и эффективно приспосабливаться к условиям окружающей среды. Поэтому, теоретически, они могут дать отпор грибам. Впрочем, это касается не только червей. Давно известно, что добыча, чтобы свести к минимуму риск быть съеденной, развивает определенное поведение и стратегии, например маскировку, избегание встреч с хищником, замирание и пр. Все это позволяет повысить шансы на выживание всего вида, а не только конкретной особи.
Со временем добыча так хорошо приспосабливается к окружающей среде, что приходится уже хищнику усовершенствовать свои охотничьи навыки, чтобы не допустить вымирание своего вида. Таким образом, между хищниками и их добычей постоянно идет эволюционная “гонка вооружений”. К слову, аналогичная ситуация происходит между грибками и бактериями, о чем мы рассказывали ранее.

Похоже, что нематоды пока не адаптировались к опасности, которая исходит от грибов. Отсюда можно сделать вывод, что хищниками они стали сравнительно недавно. Пока неизвестно, смогут ли вообще нематоды адаптироваться и изменить свое поведение. Поэтому ученые пытаются понять механизм и изменения на молекулярном уровне, которые могут привести к изменению поведения нематод, чтобы избежать гибели.
