В 45 году США подготовили ядерные бомбы, которые были сброшены на Хиросиму и Нагасаки. Изначально планировалось поразить гораздо больше городов, однако Япония подписала акт о капитуляции. Поэтому заряд от третей атомной бомбы ученые стали использовать для экспериментов. Впоследствии он получил название “ядро демона”, или “заряд демона”. Сердечник представлял собой шар из радиоактивного плутония, который в тот момент назывался “Руфусом”. Его вес составляет 6,2 кг, а диаметр 8,9 сантиметров. Однако в процессе экспериментов произошло сразу два несчастных случаях, которые окончились гибелью ученых. Это и стало причиной такого названия ядра.

“Ядро демона” — что это такое
“Заряд-демона”, как и тот заряд, который использовался при бомбардировке Нагасаки, состоял из трех частей: включал в себя две плутониево-галлиевых полусферы и кольцо, предотвращающее вырывание реактивных струй между полусферами. В своих экспериментах ученые использовали также отражатели, которые окружали активную зону, и отражали нейтроны обратно в ядерный материал, что увеличивало интенсивность деления. Так как плутоний легко корродирует, сфера была покрыта никелем.
У “ядра демона” был лишь небольшой запас периода “безопасного деления”, прежде чем радиоактивность увеличивалась и становилась сверхкритической. Это связано с тем, что как только реакция деления начинается, ее скорость быстро увеличивается. Поэтому любые внешние воздействия, например, сжатие активной зоны, могли повысить реактивность и привести к неконтролируемой цепной реакции.

Несчастный случай, связанный с “ядром демона”
В 1945 году физик-ядерщик Гарри Даглян проводил эксперимент с отражателем нейтронов на ядре демона. В какой-то момент он случайно уронил на ядро кирпич, в результате оно пришло в критическое состояние и выпустило смертельный поток нейтронного излучения.
За жизнь ученого медики боролись в течение трех месяцев, однако в конечном итоге он умер от лучевой болезни, так как получил слишком серьезные повреждения. Но, несмотря на смерть коллеги, второй ученый Луис Злотин продолжил работу.

“Щекотка хвоста дракона” — опасный эксперимент
Злотин хотел выяснить насколько ядро находится близко к сверхкритичности. Для этого он провел эксперимент, который заключался в медленном опускании отражателя нейтронов над активной зоной. Так как нейтроны отражались в ядро, критичность повышалась. Параллельно с этим происходили измерения активности внутри ядра.
В процессе экспериментов важно было, чтобы отражатель не прикоснулся к “ядру демона”, так как это могло привести к непредсказуемым последствиям. Поэтому между отражателем и ядром использовались прокладки. Однако Луис Злотин по какой-то причине не был посвящен в протокол. В результате, будучи талантливым физиком, он разработал свой метод повышения критичности, который требовал меньше времени, но был более опасным. В частности, он отказался от использования прокладок.
Вместо прокладок-направляющих, Луис Злотин использовал плоскую отвертку, чтобы обеспечить необходимое пространство между сердечником и отражателем. На протяжении всего эксперимента, он манипулировал отверткой при помощи одной руки. Эксперимент прошел успешно, причем ученый повторял его несколько раз. Из-за опасности, этот эксперимент прозвали “щекоткой хвоста дракона”, так как известный физик Ричард Фейнман сравнил такие действия по степени опасности и смелости с провоцированием дракона.

Однако в конечном итоге ученый допустил ошибку — 21 мая 1946 года, когда он демонстрировал эксперимент нескольким людям в научной лаборатории Лос-Аламоса, отвертка соскользнула лишь. И хотя отражатель полностью не коснулся сердечника, он сильно приблизился к активной зоне, в результате сердечник пришел в сверхкритическое состояние.
Из ядра вырвалась вспышка синего света, а затем возник сильный пожар. Луис Злотин быстро убрал отражатели с активной зоны, в результате чего реакция остановилась. Однако сам он успел получить сильную дозу облучения, которая убила его в течение девяти дней.
