Аборигены Австралии были высоко развиты
Археологи вместе с представителями аборигенов Дингаал и Нгуррумунгу более двух лет проводили раскопки под палящим солнцем, чтобы обнаружить следы древней цивилизации местных жителей. В результате среди останков моллюсков, костей рыб и черепах, а также обугленных растительных материалов они наткнулись на множество черепков, то есть осколков керамических изделий.
Надо сказать, что это уже не первая такая находка. Обломки керамики находили на Джиигурру еще в 2006 году в одной их приливных лагун. Однако тогда не удалось датировать находку, так как ежедневные приливы разъели черепки. В результате у исследователей осталась только надежда на то, что когда-нибудь удастся еще найти обломки керамики, и ее происхождение и возраст удастся установить.
Исследователи продолжили работы, и наткнулись на следы жизни древних людей возрастом порядка 4000 лет, однако никакой керамики здесь не было. В основном находка состояла из ракушек. Но исследователи не прекратили поиски, и удача повернулась к ним лицом в 2017 году, когда один из студентов-археологов нашел первый черепок всего в 40 сантиметрах от поверхности земли.

Как говорят археологи, сделанные ими открытия не только открывают новую главу в австралийской, меланезийской и тихоокеанской археологии, но и меняю представления о сообществе аборигенов Австралии. Научное открытие противоречит колониалистским стереотипам об этих людях.
Когда в Австралии стали делать керамику
Согласно результатам радиоуглеродного датирования, возраст наиболее глубоких слоев раскопанной массы составляет примерно 6510–5790 лет. Это значит, что Джиигурру люди заселили раньше, чем другие острова на севере Большого Барьерного рифа.
Исследователи также обнаружили, что численность населения этого места резко возросла примерно 3000 лет назад. В этот момент стала появляться керамика, а также начали накапливаться морские раковины. Как сообщают исследователи, в течение еще примерно тысячи лет, керамика активно производилась, использовалась и выбрасывалась местными жителями.

Керамика Джиигурру является самой старой, когда-либо обнаруженной в Австралии. Как сообщают исследователи, черепки на несколько сотен лет старше, чем два десятка глиняных осколков, найденных на острове в Торресовом проливе, между оконечностью австралийского материка, мысом Йорк и Папуа-Новой Гвинеей в 2006 году. Об этом авторы сообщают в издании Quaternary Science Reviews.

Анализ показал, что керамика Джиигурру производилась на месте, для ее изготовления использовали глину, известковый песок и полевой шпат. Эти материалы аналогичны пляжному песку на острове. Также исследование показало, что фрагменты принадлежали маленьким тонкостенным сосудам. Такие сосуды было легко транспортировать, так как они были легкими. Кроме того, риск повредить маленькие керамические изделия меньше, чем большие горшки.
