По данным издания Science Alert, самые острые чипсы в мире, которые стали причиной смерти 14-летнего мальчика, назывались «Paqui One Chip Challenge». В упаковке в форме гроба красовались череп и надпись «Есть что сказать напоследок?». Также на суровой этикетке была надпись об опасности продукта для беременных женщин и людей с серьезными болезнями. Производитель Amplify Snack Brands, который является дочерней компанией Hershey Company, позиционировал продукт не как еду, а как испытание — купившему его человеку предлагалось съесть единственную острую чипсину и продержаться как можно дольше, не выпив молока или другого средства от жжения.

Самый острый перец в мире
В состав самых острых чипсов в мире входили два перца: «Каролинский жнец» и «Naga Viper». По шкале Сковилла, при помощи которой специалисты определяют жгучесть сортов перца, эти варианты занимают одни из самых высоких позиций. Перец халапеньо, который добавляется в острые виды пиццы и других блюд, имеет остроту около 10 000 единиц Сковилла. Использованный в чипсах «Каролинский жнец» имеет остроту 2 000 000 единиц Сковилла. Острота перца «Naga Viper» оценивается в 1 400 000 единиц Сковилла. Возможно, вы уже понимаете насколько острыми были чипсы «Paqui One Chip Challenge», которые после упомянутой выше трагедии были сняты с продажи?

Почему от острой еды жжет во рту
Любой перец вызывает жжение во рту из-за содержания капсаицина — химического вещества, которые заставляют чувствительные к теплу нервы отправлять сигналы в головной мозг. Чем больше капсаицина содержится в перце, тем сильнее нервные клетки вызывают ощущение жжения. Когда человек ест острую пищу, его организму буквально кажется, что он горит — ответная реакция не заставляет себя долго ждать.

Именно поэтому многие люди, попробовав острую пищу, ощущают эйфорию и становятся зависимыми от экстремальной еды.

Также слишком острая еда может повредить сосуды и другие внутренние органы, потому что реакция тела всегда непредсказуема.

Смертельные случаи после употребления острой пищи редки, но все же случаются. Помимо упомянутого в начале статьи 14-летнего мальчика, были и другие жертвы острой пищи. Смертельные случаи всегда имеют разную причину: у людей могут лопнуть сосуды, перестать работать внутренние органы и так далее. Однажды 47-летний мужчина съел плод перца Naga Jolokia, острота которого составляет до 1 500 единиц Сковилла. В результате он не умер, но в его пищеводе образовалась дыра, которая сильно подпортила его жизнь.
