Современный человек занимает доминирующую позицию среди всех живых существ на Земле. Однако, много лет назад на нашей планете обитали создания, которые могли бы превратить нашу жизнь в сущий ад. Например, примерно 5-8 миллиардов лет назад в Южной Америке обитали птицы аргентависы (Argentavis magnificens) ростом в 1,2 метра и массой тела около 70 килограммов. Ученые считают, что это была самая крупная птица за всю историю Земли. Помимо нее, существовало много других доисторических монстров.

Дунклеостеи — древние рыбы опаснее акул

Тысячи людей во всем мире страдают от селахофобии — боязни акул. В некоторых странах эти кровожадные существа часто приплывают близко к берегам, и туристы становятся их жертвами. К счастью, это происходит не настолько часто, как нам кажется. К тому же, если знать, в каких курортах водятся убивающие туристов акулы, можно почти полностью защитить себя от такой ужасной смерти.

Примерно 415-360 миллионов лет назад, в водах нынешних Марокко, Бельгии, Польши и Северной Америки обитали более опасные хищники — дунклеостеи (Dunkleosteus). Эти покрытые прочными пластинами рыбы достигали 10-метровой длины и весили 4 тонны. Вместо зубов у них были костяные пластины, из которых образовывалось что-то вроде клюва. Они были совершенно неразборчивы в еде и нападали как на акул, так и на своих сородичей — логично, что они бы представляли большую опасность и для людей.

Как бы жестоко это ни звучало, к счастью, эти монстры полностью вымерли. Ученые считают, что их истребили другие рыбы с пластинчатыми телами и зубами, которые были способны пробить броню дунклеостеев.

Эндрюсархи — самые большие млекопитающие древности

Примерно 45-36 миллионов лет назад на территории нынешней Внутренней Монголии и Китая обитали эндрюсархи (Andrewsarchus mongoliensis). Речь идет о гигантских млекопитающих, которые были покрыты шерстью и имели пять пальцев с небольшими копытами. Палеонтологам удалось найти только один, и то неполный череп этого хищника. Судя по размеру головы, длина всего тела этого создания могла достигать 3,5 метров. При этом, масса тела вполне могла составлять 1 тонну.

Считается, что эндрюсархи были одними из самых крупных млекопитающих, которые вели хищный образ жизни. На сегодняшний день таковыми считаются белые медведи. Если учесть, что живущие в холодных краях нашей планеты создания запросто могут разорвать человека на части, эндрюсархи были еще более свирепыми созданиями.

Кетцалькоатль — птерозавр, наводящий ужас

Приблизительно 70-66 миллионов лет назад на нашей планете жили кетцалькоатли (Quetzalcoatlus). По мнению палеонтологов, это были самые настоящие повелители неба — их рост достигал 10 метров, а размах крыльев достигал 12-метровой длины. Они относились к отряду птерозавров и, по одной из самых правдоподобных версий ученых, питались телами умерших животных. В отличие от перечисленных выше монстров, эти летающие гиганты не были тяжелыми, потому что внутри их костей находилась пустота. Несмотря на наличие небольшого количества костей, ученые могут с уверенностью предполагать, что кетцалькоатли были достаточно сильными, чтобы взлетать в воздух без разбега. Гигантопитек — самая большая обезьяна в истории Земли

Ученые считают, что самцы горилл сильнее человека в 10 раз — они запросто могут тянуть за собой объекты весом до 800 килограммов. Между 9 и 6 миллионами лет назад на Земле обитали еще более мощные обезьяны, которым было дано очень подходящее название, гигантопитеки (Gigantopithecus).

Считается, что они жили в джунглях и горах Китая, Индии и Вьетнама. Эти похожие на современных горилл создания вырастали до 3-метровой высоты и могли весить до 550 килограммов. Вполне логично предполагать, что они были сильнее, чем нынешние приматы, а значит и представляли для людей большую опасность. Несмотря на всю мощь, они вымерли примерно 300 тысяч лет назад из-за охоты со стороны древних людей — наши предки умели строить хитрые стратегии, помогавшие одолеть даже таких сильных гигантов.

Существует мнение, что некоторые гигантопитеки живы до сих пор. Возможно, с этой верой и связаны легенды о снежном человеке.

Саблезубые тигры — самые опасные кошки в истории

Современные тигры, львы и другие дикие представители семейства кошачьих могут запросто убить человека. Примерно 10 миллионов лет назад по Земле бродили еще более опасные кошки — сумчатые саблезубые тигры (Thylacosmilus).

По размерам они были сравнимы с нынешними ягуарами — длина их тела вместе с хвостом равнялась 2 метрам. Отличительной особенностью древних хищников были два длинных, постоянно растущих клыка. А вот верхние резцы у этих созданий, судя по найденным черепам, отсутствовали. Они охотились на крупных травоядных, так что если бы они дожили до наших времен, люди тоже рисковали бы стать их жертвами.
