Во время цунами на сушу было принесено много осадочных пород. Они могут рассказать ученым, как далеко вглубь материка прошла волна и как часто происходили подобные события.
Осадочные породы, которые, являются скорее всего результатом внезапного события, были обнаружены даже в городе Ховик в провинции Квазулу-Натал. Правда, они несколько отличаются от мелкого песка, принесенного в результате цунами Сторегга в другие места. Поэтому ученые до конца не уверены, что цунами достигло Ховика. Чтобы сделать окончательные выводы, необходимы дополнительные исследования.

Ученые исследовали отложения в провинции Квазулу-Натал
Чтобы восстановить событие, которое произошло более восьми тысяч лет назад, ученые использовали компьютерное моделирование на основе геологических данных. С его помощью они выяснили насколько крупными были волны цунами, и какие участки суши могли поразить. В результате авторы работы пришли к выводу, что волны действительно могли уничтожить большую часть населения в северной части Англии.
Исследование показало, что оползни вызвали огромные волны, которые имели широкомасштабные последствия. Свидетельства цунами Сторегга были обнаружены на территории Норвегии, Англии, Дании, Гренландии и Шотландии. Высота волн вокруг материковой части Великобритании достигала 6 метров, а у берегов Шетландских островов — 20 метров. Об этом исследователи сообщают в издании Journal of Quaternary Science.
