В отличие от других представителей плотоядных млекопитающих (таких как, скажем, собаки), кошки лишены вариативности и удивительно похожи вне зависимости от размера. «Будь то котенок или детеныш тигра, они все равно невероятно похожи. Даже несмотря на разный цвет шерсти, у всех представители семейства кошачьих одинаковые головы – они круглые и не удлиняются по мере взросления животного, что является стандартной схемой развития млекопитающих. Что касается собак, то заводчики используют эти вариации в развитии, чтобы создавать породы с различными формами морды. Но поскольку у кошек нет таких отклонений в развитии, все, что им остается – менять расцветку, – объясняет Госвами.
Все это восходит к тому, что кошки чрезвычайно специфичны: у каждого представителя отряда млекопитающих (плотоядных), включая кошек и собак, есть верхний четвертый премоляр и нижний первый коренной зуб, которые образуют так называемую пару для «нарезки мяса». У многих плотоядных за режущей парой сохраняются коренные зубы, способные измельчать такие растения. Но кошки потеряли почти все, что находится за их режущими зубами. «Вот почему лисам нравится копаться в мусоре, в то время как леопарды вместо этого убивают домашний скот», – говорит биолог.

Размер не имеет значения
Итак, вне зависимости от размера, все представители семейства кошачьих практически идентичны. Более того, если внимательно посмотреть на череп льва или тигра, то определить кому именно он принадлежит будет сложно, даже для специалиста – насколько они похожи.
Однако, когда кошки становятся по-настоящему большими, у них наблюдается незначительная аллометрия – непропорциональное изменение одной части тела – небольшое удлинение морды и увеличение мышечной массы. Но эти различия ничто по сравнению с тем, что мы наблюдаем у других млекопитающих, в частности, у собак.
