Зачем создана капсула времени “Склеп Цивилизации”
Идея создать масштабную капсулу времени пришла в голову доктору Торнуэллу Джейкобсу, президенту Университета Оглторп (США, штат Джорджия) в 1936 году. Когда он изучал и преподавал историю, был поражен тем, насколько мало мы знаем о древних цивилизациях.
К примеру, знания о Древнем Египте основаны лишь на нескольких табличках с письменами, пирамидах и артефактах из гробниц. Разумеется, в 30-х годах прошлого столетия о Египте было известно еще меньше информации чем сейчас. Поэтому Торнуэлл Джейкобс решил облегчить задачу тем, кто будет изучать нашу цивилизацию в будущем. Поэтому капсула времени получила название “Склеп Цивилизации”.

Что хранится в самой большой капсуле времени
Капсулу времени решено было сделать в подвале университета. Хранилище было спроектировано подобно гробницам фараонов, однако ученые побеспокоились о том, чтобы помещение было водонепроницаемым. Для этого они переоборудовали бывший бассейн. Работы над созданием склепа начались в 1937 году. Стены комнаты отделали фарфоровыми эмалевыми пластинами, залитыми водонепроницаемой смолой. Пол, для большей надежности, был залит бетоном.
Чтобы достичь своей цели, Торнуэллу Джейкобсу необходимо было собрать в одном хранилище исчерпывающую информацию о современной цивилизации, а также накопленных знаниях человечества. Заручившись поддержкой других сотрудников университета, он собрал информацию на новом для того времени носителе, известном как “микрофильм”.
Надо сказать, что этот носитель был выбран неспроста, так как один из сотрудников университета был изобретателем первой камеры для микрофильмов. Фактически, носитель представляет собой документы, отснятые на специальную фотопленку.
Артефакты отражают культуру Америки 30-х годов
Помимо текстовых документов, в хранилище сложили кинопленки с популярными фильмами, аудиозаписи популярной в 30-х годах музыки, 100 книг, а также фотоснимки разных периодов времени, начиная с 1898 года.
Хранилище содержит много артефактов, отражающих, по мнению Торнуэлла Джейкобса, культуру тех лет. К примеру, там есть фигурка Дональда Дака, героя популярных в то время мультфильмов, печатная машинка, детские игрушки и пр. Чтобы предметы лучше сохранились, их поместили в вакуумные стеклянные капсулы. Надо сказать, что предметы для хранилища Торнуэлл Джейкобс со своими сотрудниками отбирали сами на свое усмотрение, поэтому они не обязательно точно отражают Америку 30-х годов.

Почему капсула времени будет распечатана через 6000 лет
Все работы над созданием склепа были окончены в 1940 году, в результате чего он был торжественно опечатан, а точнее его дверь из нержавейки была заварена. Вскрыть капсулу должны в 8113 году нашей эры. Почему такая странная дата?
Автор идеи объяснил, что с момента создания египетского календаря прошло 6177 лет (в 1936 году). По задумке Торнуэлла Джейкобса, наша цивилизация должна быть посередине между древними египтянами и людьми из будущего, которые распечатают капсулу времени.

В тот момент, когда ученые запечатывали склеп, мир был охвачен войной.
