Вот почему нельзя рыть ямы в песке
Один из трагических случаев, связанных с рытьем ям, произошел в феврале 2024 года — семилетняя девочка погибла на пляже во Флориде США после того, как со своим братом они вырыли в песке полутораметровую яму. В какой-то момент стенки ямы на нее обрушились и похоронили заживо.
Многие люди, которые находились поблизости, бросились девочке на помощь. Кроме того, через несколько минут на место происшествия прибыли местные пожарные. Однако спасти ребенка не удалось. Дело в том, что из таких ям, если они обрушиваются не человека, выбраться крайне трудно.

Люди иногда боятся зыбучих песков, которые встречаются возле водоемов, однако ямы гораздо опаснее, а вот зыбучие пески опасности для человека на самом деле не представляют, о чем мы рассказывали ранее. Например, в песчаных ямах только в США в период с 1997 по 2007 год погибли более 30 человека. Причем 87% из них были детьми и мужчинами.
Возраст жертв составляет от 3 до 21 года. Глубина песчаных ям, которые становились смертельными ловушками для людей, варьируется от 0,6 до 4,6 метра. Обычно обрушение происходит при прыжках в яму, прокладывании тоннелей или даже просто, когда люди подходят к краю ямы.
Чем опасны песчаные ямы и обрывы
Большинство пляжей содержат песок, который представляет собой смесь минералов. Именно они обеспечивают коричневый или характерный желто-оранжевый цвет. Он обычно достаточно тяжелый, а сами песчинки гладкие, поэтому из сухого песка можно получить холм с уклоном примерно 33 градуса. Этот уклон называется “естественным откосом”, что означает самый крутой угол, при котором холм песка может оставаться устойчивым.

Песок — это не тип материала, а размер зерна, варьирующийся от 0,06 до 2 миллиметров в диаметре. При этом материалы, из которых он состоит, определяют тип песка. Чаще всего встречается кварцевый песок, который состоит из диоксида кремния. На тропических пляжах также встречается коралловый песок, состоящий из карбоната кальция.
Если попытаться сделать уклон более крутым, ничего не получится, так как песок просто скатится, и в итоге угол все равно будет составлять 33 градуса. Этот угол определяет сила трения между каждой песчинкой. То есть, чем сильнее песчинки могут “цепляться” друг за друга, тем круче может быть угол наклона песчаного холма. И в этом заключается самый главный подвох.
Дело в том, что в яме песок обычно влажный, поэтому более стабильный. Поверхностное натяжение между песчинками и водой может удерживать естественный откос даже под углом 90 градусов. Если вы в детстве создавали замки из песка, то знаете, насколько хорошо влажный песок держит форму. Однако, по мере того, как он высыхает, поверхностное натяжение начинает ослабевать.
