Так как людям не желательно полностью отказываться от мяса, ученые уже давно ищут ему альтернативу. Многие видят ее в насекомых, которые оказались весьма полезными. Но сотрудники Университета Маккуори и Оксфордского университета решили сконцентрировать свое внимание на змеях. Чтобы изучить аспекты этой необычной формы сельского хозяйства, они наблюдали за 4600 питонами, выращиваемыми на двух фермах в Юго-Восточной Азии. Одна из них находится в центральном Таиланде, а другая — на юге Вьетнама.
Как сообщают авторы исследования, питонов содержат в гигантских террариумах с открытым верхом. Им обеспечивают необходимую вентиляцию и комфортную температуру, которая соответствует их естественной среде обитания. Рацион змей в основном включает в себя грызунов, пойманных в дикой природе, а также белковые отходы из цепочек поставок сельскохозяйственной продукции. На одной из ферм для них даже готовят “колбаски” из переработанных белковых отходов.
Важным преимуществом питонов является то, что они питаются только один раз в неделю, при этом за день их вес увеличивается на 46 граммов. Например, бирманские питоны на каждые 4,1 грамма потребляемой пищи прибавляют в весе 1 грамм чистого мяса. Это значит, что они растут гораздо эффективнее, чем другой домашний скот, такой как свиньи и коровы.

Воду змеи потребляют тоже в очень ограниченных количествах. Им бывает достаточно даже росы, которая скапливается на их чешуе по утрам. Еще один важный момент заключается в том, что питоны быстро растут. Они достигают зрелости в течение трех лет. Кроме того, они плодовиты — ежегодно один питон производит 100 яиц и способен откладывать яйца в течение двух десятилетий.
