Откуда на Земле берется гелий
Гелий возникает в результате естественного распада радиоактивных элементов, прежде всего урана и тория. Напомним, что эти радиоактивные вещества находятся в недрах нашей планеты и поддерживают ее температуру. Именно благодаря им ядро имеет колоссальную температуру, превышающую температуру Солнца.
В настоящее время гелий является побочным продуктом добычи природного газа. Он поднимается к коре и скапливается в так называемых карманах природного газа. Соответственно, чтобы получить гелий, его выделяют из метана. Однако его содержание в природном газе очень мало. Например газ, с которым работают на заводе по добыче гелия в Оренбурге, содержит всего 0,055% этого вещества.

Почему гелий заканчивается
Процесс возникновения гелия на нашей планете очень медленный, требующий тысяч или даже миллионов лет. Причем одна тонна гранита, которая в среднем содержит 10 г тория и 2 г урана, за миллионы лет выделяет всего 0,5 см3 этого газа. Поэтому гелий считается на Земле невозобновляемым ресурсом.
Как мы сказали в самом начале, гелий в семь раз легче воздуха. Поэтому, как только он оказывается на поверхности Земли, сразу же поднимается вверх и покидает пределы атмосферы, после чего уносится во вселенную солнечным ветром. Поэтому Американское химическое общество считает гелий единственным на Земле действительно не возобновляемым ресурсом. Больше ни одно другое вещество на нашей планете не утекает в космическое пространство.
В настоящее время 40% мирового объема гелия поставляется из Федерального запаса в США, созданного еще в 1920-х годах для дирижаблей. Однако будущее этого запаса пока остается неизвестным. Скорее всего он будет продан и попадет в руки частной промышленной компании. Как это отразится на цепочке поставок газа, пока неизвестно.

Не многие другие страны обладают источниками гелия. Как мы уже сказали выше, среди них есть Россия. Напомним, что РФ является также поставщиком на мировой рынок многих других редких газов. Также гелий имеет Катар, Танзания и Алжир. Надо сказать, что в России должен был открыться новый гелиевый завод, однако в настоящее время его судьба оказалась под вопросом.
Кроме того, неизвестно сколько вообще гелия осталось в мире. По оценкам Дэвида Коула-Гамильтона, профессора химии Университета Сент-Эндрюс, это газ может закончиться через 10 лет, если не будут предприняты меры. Самые же оптимистичные прогнозы указывают на то, что гелий исчезнет спустя 100-200 лет.
Для чего используют гелий
Несмотря на то, что времена дирижаблей остались давно в прошлом, гелий является гораздо более важным веществом, чем может показаться на первый взгляд. Связано это с рядом его необычных свойств. Например, у гелия самая низкая температура кипения — она составляет у -268,9°C. Благодаря этому свойству, гелий используется для охлаждения сверхпроводящих магнитов в аппаратах МРТ.

Кроме того газ используется в жидкостных ракетных двигателях, поэтому необходим НАСА и SpaceX. Также большим потребителем гелия в мире является Большой адронный коллайдер в Швейцарии. Для его работы в неделю требуется около 120 тонн этого газ, о чем сообщает издание Bloomberg.
