На ночном небе вскоре появится еще одна звезда, причем она будет искусственной. НАСА в рамках миссии Ландольта запускает необычный мини-спутник типа CubeSat, размером всего с хлебницу. Казалось бы, на небе и так достаточно звезд, зачем еще ученым понадобилась еще одна, да еще и такая маленькая? На самом деле ее значение для науки сложно переоценить, так как она поможет понять некоторые величайшие загадки космоса, в том числе связанные с темной энергией. Запуск миссии запланирован на 2029 год. Спутник будет находиться на расстоянии более 35 тысяч километров, и он станет первым в истории инструментом подобного рода.

Зачем НАСА нужна «искусственная звезда»
Миссия получила название «Ландольт» в честь уже покойного американского астронома Арло Ландольта. Ее разработкой занимаются сотрудники университета Джорджа Мейсона. Ее бюджет оценивается всего в 19,5 миллиона долларов США.
К сожалению, спутник CubeSat даже ночью не удастся увидеть невооруженным глазом из-за маленького размера и большого расстояния от Земли, но зато ее легко отследить при помощи телескопа. А упростит эту задачу тот факт, что спутник Ландольт будет казаться неподвижным на небе, так как его запланированная скорость соответствует скорости вращения Земли.

«Искусственная звезда» позволит астрономам сверить результаты измерения яркости объекта с фактическими данными. В отличие от натуральных звезд, ученые будут точно знать сколько света излучает этот объект. Если окажется, что телескопы определяют этот показатель не совсем верно, значит и все предыдущие исследования астрономов содержали ошибки.
Как сообщает издание Business Insider, для калибровки оборудования, спутник будет посылать на Землю лазеры с определенным количеством световых частиц, или фотонов. Воспользоваться инструментом смогут все обсерватории, способные обнаружить на небе необычный объект.

Как спутник поможет раскрыть загадки космоса
Вся современная астрономия, фактически, основана на свете, который улавливают телескопы. На основе луча света ученые делают выводы о температуре звезды, ее массе, типах экзопланет, которые вокруг нее вращаются, а также выясняют, может ли потенциально на них существовать жизнь.
Например, определив по лучу света температуру звезды, исследователи могут рассчитать, на каком расстоянии от нее должна находиться планета, чтобы на ней могла существовать жидкая вода и, возможно, жизнь. Вода, как известно, является одним из ключевых ингредиентов для зарождения жизни в том виде, котором мы ее знаем. Соответственно, если на планете не может быть жидкой воды из-за слишком высокой или низкой температуры, то на ней не имеет смысла искать жизнь.
Однако проблема таких исследований заключается в том, что ученые не могут точно узнать, сколько света излучают те или иные звезд. Они находятся слишком далеко, поэтому невозможно отправить к ним зонд и точно измерить яркость. Кроме того, часть света поглощает атмосфера Земли, что также снижает точность исследований.
