Одной из самых известных сетей пещер в мире является пещера Сен-Марсель во Франции. Ее ближняя зона, то есть часть, расположенная у входа, была заселена людьми в течение многих тысяч лет. Поэтому пещера уже многие годы привлекает внимание антропологов со всего мира. Однако большая ее часть, длина которой составляет более 60 километров, мало интересовала ученой, так как является труднодоступной. Ученые обнаружили следы пребывания людей на расстоянии более чем в полтора километра от входа в пещеру. Это очень странно, так как путь к этому месту чрезвычайно опасен, например, он содержит глубокие ямы. Даже по современным меркам, с учетом наличия снаряжения и специального оборудования, а также мощного освещения, ямы считаются очень опасными.

Секрет пещеры Сен-Марсель
О той части пещеры, которой идет речь, ученым известно давно. Ученые обнаружили на полу множество разбитых отложений — сталактитов (свисающие вниз образование на потолке пещеры) и сталагмитов (образованные на полу отложений, которые выросли вверх).
В статье о Пещере кристаллов мы рассказывали о том, что эти отложения образованы подземными водами, по сути минеральными растворами, которые заполняли пещеры, а затем отступали.
Во многих пещерах по всему миру встречаются сломанные сталактиты и сталагмиты. В основном это связано с тем, что в XIX веке среди спелеологов и просто туристов было популярным отламывать куски таких отложений в качестве сувениров. Также они оставляли в пещере следы в память о своем ее посещении. Поэтому изначально предполагалось, что разбитые отложения в пещере Сен-Марселе связаны с такими туристами.

Однако со временем ученые стали находить следы пребывания доисторических людей в других пещерах. В результате у исследователей возникло подозрение, что в пещере Сен-Марселе побывали вовсе не посетители в XIX веке, а тоже древние люди. К счастью, в случае с отложениями, определить когда они были сломаны несложно.
Кто поломал сталагмиты в непроходимой пещере
Сталагмиты образуются в результате длительного контакта с водой. Если, например, он сломан, но вода продолжает течь, то спустя некоторое время вырастет заново. Поэтому исследователи изучили отростки на месте слома. Кроме того, они использовали уран-ториевое датирование. Уран растворяется в воде, а затем оседает с другими минералами. Продуктом его распада является торий. Соответственно наличие тория говорит о распаде урана после осаждения минерала.
Скорость распада урана известна и фиксирована, благодаря чему по количеству тория можно определить возраст отложений. На основе этих методов ученые выяснили, что сталагмиты образовались в период между 125 тысячами и 70 тысячами лет назад.
