Электрический экспериментальный самолет NASA X-57 Maxwell потерпел неудачу — он не взлетел в конце 2023 года, как было запланировано, и больше никогда не взлетит, так как проект был закрыт. Однако это не поставило крест на электрической авиации в целом. Собственно говоря, она существует уже давно, но пока удавалось создавать только маленькие самолеты. Однако уже ведутся работы и над созданием крупных электрических авиалайнеров. К примеру, голландская компания Elysian планирует поднять в воздух свой самолет, способный вместить 90 пассажиров, в 2033 году. Работа над ним ведется совместно с исследователями Делфтского технологического университета. Ключом к созданию этого самолета станут новые батареи более высокой электрической плотности, которые смогут обеспечить двигатели достаточным количеством энергии, чтобы самолет мог преодолеть 800 или даже 1000 км.

E9X представляет собой самолет с питанием от батарей, как и неудавшийся самолет NASA X-57 Maxwell. Изначально, согласно задумке инженеров, он сможет летать на расстояние до 800 км. Электрический пассажирский самолет E9X
В другом своем исследовании ученые привели приблизительные характеристики и конструкционные особенности самолета E9X, рассчитанного на 90 пассажиров. В работе утверждается, что аккумуляторы будут встроены в крылья низкорасположенного типа. Машина будет потреблять 167 Втч на пассажиро-километр. То есть для перевозки на 1 километр одного пассажира потребуется 167 Вт энергии.
По мнению исследователей, главное преимущество электрического самолета заключается в том, что он в значительно меньшей степени будет воздействовать на окружающую среду. В этом плане он даже превзойдет альтернативы на основе водорода. По мнению авторов исследования, воздействие таких самолетов на окружающую среду сравнимо с наземными электромобилями.

Как уже было сказано выше, представители компании Elysian рассчитывают, что к 2033 году удастся не только построить самолет, но и поднять его в небо.
