В книге говорится, что богатые мужчины всегда ели лежа на животе. Считалось, что употребление пищи в горизонтальном положении улучшает пищеварение и подчеркивает высокий статус человека в обществе. Положение лежа позволяло римлянам полностью расслабиться — левой рукой они поддерживали голову, а правой брали заранее нарезанные рабами кусочки еды со стола. Остатки еды вроде косточек мужчины кидали прямо на пол — полы в банкетных залах часто «украшались» мозаиками с изображением остатков еды, чтобы замаскировать беспорядок.

Кстати, о смерти — жители Древнего Рима были очень суеверными людьми, и во время пиров соблюдали некоторые ритуалы. Упавшие со стола кусочки еды считались принадлежащими потустороннему миру, поэтому поднимать их было не принято, чтобы мертвые не пришли мстить за отобранную пищу. Плохой приметой была рассыпанная соль, а яичную скорлупу было принято измельчать. Если петух пел в непривычное время, его тут же резали и съедали.

Каждая трапеза завершалась разговорами о смерти. Таким образом богатые люди в очередной раз напоминали себе «ловить момент» и проживать полноценную жизнь. Чтобы напоминание об этом не исчезало, емкости для соли и перца изготавливались в форме черепов. Также представители Древнего Рима часто приглашали к застолью своих умерших знакомых — рядом со столом нередко стояли их скульптуры.
