Маршрут был проложен не с востока на запад (длиной 9647 километров), а с запада на восток, в результате чего полет длился почти сутки. Однако мало кто знает, что это был самый дальний, но не самый долгий перелет без посадки. В 1958–1959 годах два пилота Роберт Тимм и Джон Кук совершили перелет, который длился 64 дня, 22 часа и 19 минут. Тем самым они установили рекорд, который держится уже 65 лет. Самый длинный перелет в истории и казино Hacienda
Как бы это странно ни звучало, но история самого длительного перелета без посадки началась с казино. В 1956 году в Лас-Вегасе открылся отель с игорным клубом, получивший название Hacienda. Чтобы прорекламировать его открытие, владельцы решили устроить рекламный трюк невероятным масштабов — написать название казино на борту самолета и установить на нем мировой рекорд по продолжительности полета.
Среди персонала отеля был пилот бомбардировщика времен Второй мировой войны Роберт Тимм. В казино он работал механиком по игровым автоматам. Когда ему в руки попал амбициозный план, он согласился воплотить его в жизнь.

Для реализации задуманного был выбран четырехместный самолет Cessna 172, который выпускался серийно. Однако для совершения полета в конструкцию машины было внесено множество модификаций. В частности, в самолет был установлен дополнительный бак емкостью почти 360 литров. Но, разумеется, даже второго бака было бы недостаточно для полета в течение двух месяцев. Поэтому инженерам пришлось решить проблему дозаправки самолета в воздухе.
Как самолет дозаправлялся в воздухе
В настоящее время дозаправка не представляет собой никакой сложности — для этих целей используют специальные самолеты-дозаправщики с топливом. Но тогда на дворе стоял 1958 год, и проблему решить было не посто. Попытки осуществить дозаправку с воздуха не увенчались успехом, поэтому дозаправляться решили с земли при помощи грузовика, о чем сообщает CNN.
Когда самолету нужно было дозаправиться, он снижал высоту и летел очень низко и медленно, лишь незначительно превышая скорость сваливания. К нему приближался грузовик, тросом с самолета фиксировали шланг и поднимали при помощи лебедки. Топливо подавалось в бак самолета при помощи насоса. Как сообщают очевидцы — дозаправка представляла собой шоу летного мастерства. Причем иногда эта операция осуществлялась ночью, что требовало от пилотов еще большей точности.

Каждый раз дозаправка происходила на идеально ровном участке дороги вдоль границы Калифорнии и Аризоны. Самолет здесь мог снизить скорость, а грузовик, наоборот, набирал необходимую скорость и мог беспрепятственно двигаться с ровной скоростью. В этот же момент на борт корабля передавалась еда, вода и другие необходимые припасы.
Самый долгий полет в истории
Совершить перелет удалось не сразу. Первые три попытки Роберта Тимма закончились неудачей из-за различных технических проблем, включая трудности дозаправки. Но пилот не стал отчаиваться и решил предпринять четвертую попытку, но на этот раз вместе с авиамехаником Джоном Куком. 4 декабря 1958 года экипаж взлетел с аэропорта Маккаран в Лас-Вегасе и больше 64 дней не приземлялся. Все это время самолет летал над пустынными районами Невады, вне городской застройки. Чтобы избежать мошенничества, после взлета одно из колес с грузовика покрасили белой краской, а затем проверили перед посадкой.
Как сообщается, в течение полета Джон Кук вел дневник, но по мере продолжения миссии записи в нем становились все более бредовыми. Очевидно сказывался стресс, недостаток сна, скука и физическая усталость. Пилотам приходилось действительно нелегко.

Пока один из пилотов управлял самолетом, второй спал на матрасе в задней части кабины. Но в шумном самолете с сильными аэродинамическими вибрациями сделать это было сложно. Однажды постоянное недосыпание их чуть не убило. На 36-й день полета Роберт Тимм уснул за штурвалом, в результате чего самолет летел на автопилоте более часа на высоте 1200 метров. А спустя несколько дней автопилот вообще вышел из строя.
Чтобы помыться, была предусмотрена съемная платформа, которую устанавливали между открытой кабиной и распоркой крыла. Также самолет имел складной кемпинговый туалет. Пакеты с содержимым просто выбрасывались из окна самолета в пустыню.
Рекорд в авиации, который до сих пор не побит
Несмотря на все сложности, экипаж оставался в воздухе. Даже после того, как предыдущий рекорд, который составлял 47 дней, был побит, Роберт Тимм и Джон Кук решили усложнить задачу пилотам, которые решат превзойти их достижение. В результате их полет продолжался почти 65 дней. К его концу отказали многие системы самолета, среди которых обогреватель кабины, указатель уровня топлива, насос для перекачки топлива, посадочные фары и пр. Но самое удивительное, что продолжал работать двигатель.

Когда у него спросили о возможности еще одного полета, он ответил, что в случае возникновения такого желания, закроется в мусорном баке с включенным пылесосом, попросит Тимма подать стейки на косточке, нарезанные в термосе, и будет сидеть там, пока утром не выйдет на работу его психиатр.
