О том, что белые акулы обладают высокой выносливостью, ученые подозревали уже давно. Но научное подтверждение этому было получено только в 2004 году. За год до этого исследователи прикрепили GPS-трекер к спинному плавнику белой акулы, которой впоследствии было дано имя Николь. Судя по спутниковым данным, она отплыла из вод Южной Африки и спустя несколько месяцев оказалась на побережье Западной Австралии.
Интересный факт: белая акула с датчиком на плавнике получила имя в честь актрисы Николь Кидман. Известно, что исполнительница главных ролей в фильмах «Мулен Руж» и «Догвилль» очень любит акул, и ныряние с ними — это одно из ее любимых занятий.

Более детальное изучение собранных данных показало, что белая акула переплыла весь Индийский океан и тем самым преодолела 11 100 километров. На это путешествие у нее ушло 99 дней, то есть 3,3 месяца. На корабле покорить Индийский океан можно за 7 дней, но стоит признать, что плавательные средства движутся гораздо быстрее и им не нужен отдых. Акулы же являются живыми созданиями, и поставленный Николь рекорд не смогло побить ни одно морское животное.
Еще больше авторов исследования удивило то, что спустя некоторое время белая акула повернулась и отправилась из Австралии обратно в сторону Южной Африки.

Как плавают акулы
При помощи трекера на плавнике ученые узнали несколько интересных подробностей о белых акулах. Например, акула Николь во время своего плавания из Африки в Австралии двигалась со средней скоростью 4,7 километров в час. Это намного меньше, чем максимально возможная скорость движения белых акул. Однако такое замедление могло позволить хищнику экономить силы и преодолеть большое расстояние, почти не останавливаясь на передышки. Свои быстрые рывки акулы чаще всего совершают только во время охоты.

Большую часть времени белая акула плыла на поверхности. Но иногда она погружалась в бассейн Индийского океана на глубину до 980 метров. В 2005 году, когда ученые в очередной раз изучали собранные ими данные, это считалось рекордом глубины погружения белых акул в воду. Но впоследствии выяснилось, что на самом деле белые акулы способны нырять и глубже — сейчас рекорд их погружения под воду составляет 1128 метров.
Почему акулы вымирают
Белая акула Николь на своем примере показала, насколько широк ареал обитания этих созданий. Науке стало известно, что разные популяции акул могут запросто встречаться друг с другом. Несмотря на то, что эти хищные рыбы обладают тремя рядами острых зубов, во время долгих плаваний они сильно рискуют. Мало того, что иногда они становятся жертвами рыбного промысла, так еще у них есть естественные враги, угрожающие их популяции. Еще одними крайне выносливыми животными являются стрижи.
