В 60-х, 70-х и 80-х годах реклама Кока-Колы в Мексике была везде — по радио, телевизору, на билбордах и вывесках. Кроме того, компания становилась спонсором всех самых крупных и громких мероприятий в стране, таких как Олимпиада 1968, Чемпионат Мира по футболу 1970 и т.д. Даже сейчас вывески Coca Cola можно встретить в Мексике буквально на каждом шагу.
Кроме того, менеджеры Coca-Cola приложили немало усилий, чтобы интегрировать напиток в культуру местных групп населения. Иногда это происходило даже путем подкупа старейшин тех или иных сообществ. Ярким тому примером служит народ цоцили, который по сей день остается верен культуре своих предков.
Согласно распространенной версии, компания заплатила старшинам цоцили большую сумму денег, чтобы они распространили легенду о том, что напиток является священным. Конечно, никаких доказательств этой версии нет, однако местные жители действительно верят, что Кока-Кола изгоняет из тел злых демонов. Если при этом учесть, что бутылки с напитком используют в священных обрядах, то версия кажется вполне правдоподобной.

Как несложно догадаться, потребление сладкого напитка приводит к ожирению и диабету. Согласно данным ВОЗ, от избыточного веса в стране страдают 63,4% населения. При этом смертность от диабета достигает 14%. Для сравнения, уровень смертности от рака составляет всего 12%. Согласно официальным данным, в Мексике диабет диагностирован у 13,1 млн человек, причем эта цифра постоянно растет.

В связи со сложившейся ситуацией, в стране появились даже борцы с Кока Колой, которые предупреждают о вреде напитка. Однако, учитывая насколько глубоко укоренилась традиция ее потребления, вряд ли им удастся изменить ситуацию в ближайшем будущем.
