Согласно историческим данным, облако из дыма и горячего пепла поднялось на высоту 33 метров, выделив больше тепловой энергии, чем при взрыве атомной бомбы в Хиросиме. Ученые начали раскопки в 1860 году и обнаружили под слоями пепла десятки человеческих тел. Сегодня Помпеи являются популярным местом среди туристов, и некоторые из них тайком от экскурсоводов забирают с собой на память об историческом месте различные артефакты. Недавно Габриэль Зухтригель, директор археологического парка в Помпеях, решила поделиться содержанием одного из писем. По словам отправительницы, спустя год после возвращения из печально известного города, у нее был диагностирован рак груди. И это при том, что она была молодым и полностью здоровым человеком — врачи ей сказали, что это «просто невезение». Вместе с письмом она отправила в парк взятые ею вещи.

Ученые уверены, что никакого проклятия фараонов не существует
Такая же участь ждала исследователей, которые в 1973 году вскрыли саркофаг польского правителя Казимира IV Ягеллончика. Перед своей смертью он велел мастерам выгравировать на своей гробнице пугающую надпись «Разрушитель этой работы будет проклят». Действительно, после вскрытия ученые ощутили головную боль и у них возникли проблемы с сердцем — спустя несколько дней часть из них умерла, а остальные погибли в течение года. Но никакого проклятия не было, потому что исследователи попросту надышались опасной плесенью и умерли от последствий вызванной ею болезни.
