В августе 1587 года, на острове Роанок недалеко от берегов сегодняшней Северной Каролины, была основана первая английская колония на американском континенте. Попыток создать поселение на этом клочке земли было несколько: первая группа переселенцев покинула остров из-за бедственного положения, а вторая из 400 человек увидела заброшенную колонию и из-за возникших проблем частично вернулась на родину. Оставшиеся на острове англичане тоже пропали — вернувшийся с подмогой моряк Джон Уайт не нашел ничего, кроме нацарапанного на столбе слова «Cro». Что случилось с членами уже ставшей легендарной исчезнувшей колонии, считалось «старейшей неразгаданной тайной Америки». Однако, относительно недавно ученые раскрыли эту тайну.

Более 400 лет назад на острове Роанок внезапно исчезли сотни людей

По данным издания IFL Science, некоторое время вторая группа колонистов острова Роанок всеми силами пыталась построить собственное поселение. Оказалось, что это очень трудная задача — в течение первого года жизни стало ясно, что им требуется гораздо больше ресурсов и людей для успешности затеи. Кроме того, в некоторых источниках говорится, что чужакам не очень были рады коренные народы острова, представители племен Секотан и Кроатан. В ходе стычек коренные жители якобы даже убили одного из колонистов, когда он охотился на крабов.

Чтобы привезти больше ресурсов и людей, моряк Джон Уайт вернулся в Англию — при этом, он оставил семью на острове. Из-за войны в Англии, ему пришлось задержаться на целых три года. После возвращения обратно 18 августа 1590 года, он и его команда с ужасом обнаружили, что их поселение заброшено. Колония будто испарилась, потому что в поселении не было ни тел убитых могил, ни могил. Единственное, что нашел Джон Уайт, это надпись «Cro» на одном из столбов на границе поселения.

Почему исчезла колония Роанок
Существует много гипотез исчезновения колонии Роанок. Одна из них гласит, что поселенцы стали жертвами нападения индейцев — такая вероятность была, однако тел найдено не было, поэтому версия считается ошибочной. Также предполагается, что местные племена во время массовой галлюцинации под предводительством шамана украла всех жителей колонии и принесла в жертву своему богу Кроатону.

Есть еще две гипотезы, которые похожи на правду, но таковыми не являются. Первая гласит, что из-за долгого отсутствия подмоги у поселенцев закончилось терпение и они решили вернуться в Англию своими силами. После отплытия Джона Уайта, на берегу остались небольшие лодки — колонизаторы могли уплыть и умереть в океане. Вторая версия заключается в том, что население погибло из-за неизвестной болезни.

Жизнь с индейцами
Сегодня самой правдивой причиной исчезновения колонии Роанок гласит, что люди обратились за помощью к соседним племенам и остались с ними жить. Несмотря на то, что в некоторых источниках индейцев описывают как враждебных, на самом деле они явно были дружелюбными. Этой версии с завидной регулярностью появляются научные подтверждения.
По мнению ученых, надпись «Cro» обозначала название племени Кроатан. За три года отсутствия Джона Уайта и подкрепления, люди запросто могли найти общий язык с этим племенем и даже завести с ними семьи. В 1701 году исследователь Джон Лоусон посетил остров Роанок и узнал, что некоторые предки представителей племени Кроатан были белыми людьми — должно быть, это те самые лондонцы, которые не дождались Джона Уайта.

Скорее всего, к индейцам ушли не вся колония — некоторые отделились и пошли своим путем. В 2020 году, примерно в 70 километрах к западу от острова Роанок, ученые нашли множество английских керамических изделий. По мнению археологов, они точно были изготовлены членами исчезнувшей колонии Роанок.
