Находкой костей мамонта сейчас никого не удивить. Палеонтологи находили даже целые мумифицированные туши этих животных. Однако обычно их обнаруживают в Арктике, так как останки хорошо сохраняются в вечной мерзлоте. Но находка, о которой далее пойдет речь, была сделана на берегу реки Оки в Нижегородской области. Восьмилетняя девочка обнаружила кости шерстистого мамонта (Mammuthus primigenius) и древнего бизона возрастом 100 тысяч лет. Останки оказались на поверхности после оползня. По мнению ученых, на этой территории мамонты вымерли лишь 10 тысяч лет назад, когда последний ледниковый период подходил к своему завершению.

Восьмилетняя девочка Марьям Мирсаитова, будучи на рыбалке со своим отцом, обнаружила на месте оползня странные объекты — останки очень крупных животных. Они включали в себя кости ноги и позвоночник. Отец девочки сразу заподозрил, что находка может иметь ценность для науки, и отправил фотографии в Нижегородский музей-заповедник. Как выяснилось, он оказался прав.
Кости шерстистого мамонта включали в себя коленный сустав и нижнюю большеберцовую кость. Удивительно, что кости хорошо сохранены, однако мягкие ткани разложились в осадке полностью. По размеру костей ученые пришли к выводу, что они принадлежали взрослому животному. Как уже было сказано выше, предположительно мамонт жил около 100 тысяч лет назад. Шерстистые мамонты населяли Россию
Согласно данным, полученным в результате генетических исследований, шерстистые мамонты возникли в Сибири 450 тысяч лет назад. Оттуда они распространились в Северную Америку, а затем, 300 тысяч лет назад северо-американская ветвь вернулась в Азию через Берингию. Со временем эта ветвь полностью заместила собой коренных, азиатских мамонтов. Впоследствии эти животные также заселили Европу.
Особенностью этих мамонтов была длинная шерсть, которая могла достигать в длину 80 см. Высота взрослых особей достигала 3,5 метров, а вес их составлял порядка 7,5 тонны. Самцы имели уникальную форму бивней — они представляли собой полуспираль, загнутую внутрь. Длина бивней достигала 4 метров, а вес превышал 110 килограмм, так как они росли в течение всей жизни животных. У самок бивни были более ровными, дугообразными.

Одна из костей вымершего животного, обнаруженная в Нижегородской области
Мамонты населяли территорию современной России. Чаще всего их останки, как было сказано выше, находят Сибири. Однако иногда их кости находят и в гораздо более теплых регионах. Причем речь не только о шерстистых, но и других видах мамонтов. Например, одной из самых известных находок является так называемый “ярославский мамонт”, останки которого были обнаружены в Ярославле на участке, где сейчас находится Московский проспект.
Примерно 9-10 тысяч лет назад шерстистые мамонты вымерли. Однако они еще продолжали жить на острове Врангеля. Последние животные вымерли 4000 тысячи лет назад. Таким образом шерстистые мамонты стали последними живущими мамонтами на Земле. Считается, что они вымерли в связи с окончанием ледникового периода, а также из-за человеческой деятельности — охота, вероятно, сократила численность популяции.

Останки степного бизона
Не менее интересной находкой Марьям Мирсаитовой стал позвонок степного бизона (Bison priscus). Это тоже древнее вымершее животное, которое обитало в Северной Америке, Европе и Азии в период от 2,6 миллиона лет до 11700 лет назад. Степной бизон является предком современных европейских и американских бизонов.
Кроме того, среди находок была кость еще одного животного, идентифицировать которого ученым пока не удалось. Возможно, им удастся установить его личность в ходе дальнейших исследований.

Сотрудники музея призывают людей, обнаруживших останки древних животных, передавать их ученым, как поступил отец Марьям Мирсаитовой. Несмотря на то, что останки мамонтов не являются редкостью, каждый экземпляр имеет ценность и может рассказать ученым новую, неизвестную ранее информацию о вымерших животных. К примеру, недавно ученым благодаря некоторым останкам мамонтов удалось выяснить, что они иногда впадали в ярость. Это состояние принято называть слоновьим бешенством.
