В 1960-х годах ученые впервые выдвинули гипотезу о существовании амбиполярного электрического поля, управляющего процессом утечки земной атмосферы в космическое пространство. С конца 1960-х годов космические аппараты, пролетающие над полюсами Земли, регистрировали поток частиц, выходящих из атмосферы в космос. В те годы ученые допускали небольшой «отток воздуха» земной атмосферы в космическое пространство, так как интенсивный, не фильтруемый солнечный свет должен этому способствовать, подобно пару, испаряющемуся из кастрюли с водой.
Наблюдаемый полярный ветер, однако, был более загадочным – многие частицы внутри него были холодными и двигались со сверхзвуковой скоростью. Тогда исследователи предположили, что вытягивать частицы в космос может еще не открытое электрическое поле.

Физики полагали, что оно должно быть невероятно слабым, а возникает на расстоянии около 250 километров над поверхностью планеты. Увы, но для обнаружения гипотетического электрического поля требовались мощные технологии, которых в те годы попросту не существовало. К счастью, в 2016 году команда ученых из NASA приступила к работе над изобретением подходящего прибора.

Новое электрическое поле
В ионосфере нашей планеты, на высоте около 250 километров, атомы распадаются на отрицательно заряженные электроны и положительно заряженные ионы. Напомним, что электроны невероятно легкие — даже малейший выброс энергии может отправить их в космос. Ионы же по меньшей мере в 1836 раз тяжелее и, как правило, опускаются к поверхности.
Если бы на них действовала только гравитация, то обе популяции частиц со временем отдалялись бы друг от друга. Их противоположные электрические заряды, однако, привели к образованию электрического поля, которое связывает их вместе и предотвращает любое разделение зарядов. Более того, оно противодействует некоторым гравитационным эффектам.

«Новое» электрическое поле получило свое название из-за двунаправленности или «амбиполярности», так как «действует» в обоих направлениях. Это означает, что ионы, опускаясь под действием гравитации, притягивают электроны к себе, а электроны, в свою очередь, поднимают ионы на большую высоту, отчаянно пытаясь вырваться в космос.
Суммарный эффект амбиполярного поля заключается в увеличении высоты атмосферы, в результате чего некоторые ионы поднимаются достаточно высоко, чтобы улететь с полярным ветром, –объясняют исследователи из NASA.
Миссия NASA Endurance
Чтобы выяснить происхождение полярного ветра и подробно изучить амбиполярное поле, в 2022 году исследователи запустили ракету Endurance с полигона на Шпицбергене недалеко от Северного полюса, отправив ее на высоту 768,03 километров над землей, прежде чем она приземлилась в Гренландском море 19 минут спустя. «Шпицберген – единственный ракетный полигон в мире, где можно пролететь сквозь полярный ветер и произвести необходимые измерения», – отметила Сьюзи Имбер, физик из Лестерского университета.
Миссия Endurance собирала данные на протяжении 518 км полета и обнаружила незначительное изменение напряжения (на 0,55 вольта), что примерно соответствует разряду батареи часов. Тем не менее, именно эта разница напряжений выталкивает ионы водорода – наиболее распространенные частицы в солнечном ветре – с силой, в 10,6 раз превышающей гравитацию.

В целом, ученые обнаружили, что амбиполярное поле увеличивает так называемую масштабную высоту ионосферы на 271%. Более того, это электрическое поле позволит исследователям узнать тайны других планет и определить, какие из них могут быть пригодны для жизни.
