Акулы, в зависимости от вида, могут рожать детей как путем откладывания яиц, так и живорождением. Яйцекладущими являются только 30% от всех видов акул, остальные — живородящие или яйцеживородящие.

В 2024 году ученые впервые увидели младенца белой акулы, и то они в этом не до конца увидели. Беспилотному летательному аппарату удалось снять на видео особь белой акулы длиной 1,5 метров. Длина тела взрослых белых акул превышает 4,5 метров, поэтому исследователи решили, что это детеныш. За маленькой особью тянулся белый след — возможно, это были внутриматочные вещества. Но также есть предположение, что это просто акула с кожным заболеванием. В общем, конкретного ничего нет, все очень запутанно.

Существует предположение, что китовые акулы размножаются в зоне кораллового рифа Нингалу недалеко от берегов Австралии. Ученые были бы рады понаблюдать за этим процессом, но хищники часто погружаются на глубину 2000 метров, куда не могут заглянуть даже современные устройства. Так что размножение китовых акул — это еще одна загадка для науки.

Также ученые ничего не знают о том, как рожают синие киты — самые крупные животные, которые когда-либо жили на Земле. Исследователям максимум удавалось наблюдать за тем, как огромные киты кормят своих 2700-килограммовых малышей. А еще операторы National Geographic однажды сняли на видео то, как взрослый синий кит плавает рядом со своим детенышем.

Например, в глубинах океанов живут 14-метровые кальмары, которых мы еще долго не сможем увидеть вживую — уж слишком глубоко они живут.
