Однако согласно последним исследованиям ученых, существует еще один континент, площадь которого составляет почти пять миллионов квадратных километров. Правда, большая его часть погружена под воду, поэтому обнаружить его удалось только в последнее десятилетие. Теперь ученые впервые смогли нанести его на карту, что дало понимание того, как он возник десятки миллионов лет назад. Как сообщают авторы работы, это произошло в период между 60 и 100 миллионами лет назад, то есть когда распадался суперконтинент Гондвана.

Континент, о котором идет речь, называется Зеландия. Он включает в себя Новую Зеландию и острова Новой Каледонии. Согласно новому исследованию, которое было опубликовано в журнале Tectonics, только 5% континента находится над поверхностью воды. Остальная же его часть была затоплена. На видео выше подробно показано как это происходило по мере того, как Зеландия отделялась от Гондваны.
Надо сказать, что Зеландия теперь стала первым континентом на планете, геология которого изучена вдоль всех границ. В то же время — это последний континент, который был открыт учеными.
Вдоль всей Зеландии проходит гранитный хребет
Как возник затерянный континент
Наносить новый континент на карту ученые начали еще несколько лет назад. В 2019 году была картирована геология региона Южной Зеландии площадью в полтора миллиона квадратных километров. Это позволило выяснить, что Зеландия растягивалась, скручивалась и истончалась по мере того, как отделилась от суперконтинента Гондвана.
В результате последнего исследования также удалось нанести подводный регион континта, который находится с северной стороны. Он расположен между Новой Зеландией, Новой Каледонией и Австралией. Также исследование показало, что Зеландия начала отделяться от Гондваны в результате вулканической активности. Между ней и суперконтинентом находился вулканический регион, который содержал лавовые породы. Он проходил вдоль всей границы Гондваны и Зеландии.
В какой-то момент расплавленная магма в этом регионе стала вырываться из трещин и разломов, в результате чего участок Гондваны начал истончаться и растягиваться. В итоге вулканическая активность, фактически, отрезала Зеландию. Этот процесс длился примерно 40 миллионов лет.
Между Зеландией и Гондваной находится гигантский вулканический регион
Надо сказать, что ранее роль вулканической активности в распаде суперконтинента недооценивалась. Как сообщают ученые, общая площадь лавового участка составляла 250 тысяч квадратных километров, то есть была примерно равна площади Новой Зеландии.
Лавовый регион Гондваны
Обнаружить лавовый регион удалось благодаря магнитным аномалиям, которые были выявлены в ходе магнитных исследований морского дна. Они не отличаются от аналогичных аномалий, вызванных базальтовыми лавовыми породами, которые ранее были добыты в других регионах Земли. Например, такие же магнитные лавовые породы встречаются на суше вблизи мыса Рейнга, Бленхейма, Хокитики и Эшбертона, а также в Новой Каледонии, на островах Чатем и Окленд.
Ученые исследовали образцы грунта с морского дна
Ученые также изучили образцы горных пород, полученные со дна возле Новой Каледонии. Благодаря им удалось обнаружить и нанести на карту гранитный участок хребта длиной 4 тысячи километров, возраст которого составляет от 100 до 250 миллионов лет. Как сообщается в заявлении GNS Science, он проходит через середину Зеландии.
