Сначала жизнь существовала только в воде, в виде разнообразных микробов. Со временем одноклеточные организмы превратились в многоклеточных, они становились больше. Потом некоторые виды развились до такой степени, что вышли из воды и начали жить на суше. Чтобы выживать в различных условиях, они меняли свой облик, обрастали кожей или мехом, обзаводились острыми зубами для охоты на других животных или длинными шеями для поедания листьев высоких деревьев.

На протяжении миллиардов лет облик нашей планеты постоянно менялся. Сегодня суша делится на материки вроде Евразии, Африки, Северной и Южной Америки и так далее. Но так было не всегда — например, в период между 335—175 миллионами лет назад суша представляла собой суперконтинент под названием Пангея. В ходе последующих миллионов лет, оказавшиеся на разных материках предки современных животных постепенно приспосабливались к новым условиям. От них произошли современные живые создания, которые являются коренными обитателями Австралии, Антарктиды и других частей мира.
В качестве примера можно привести то, как кенгуру стали исключительно австралийскими животными. Сумчатые животные, к которым относятся кенгуру, возникли на землях нынешней Южной Америки примерно 70-80 миллионов лет назад. В те времена территории Южной Америки, Антарктиды и Австралии были соединены в суперконтинент Гондвану.
Когда Гондвана начала распадаться на части, сумчатые мигрировали из Южной Америки через Антарктиду в клочок земли, который сегодня является Австралией. Животные смогли перейти через Антарктиду потому, что миллионы лет назад там было значительно теплее, чем сегодня.
