Теперь же выяснить это удалось ученым из Каролинского института в Швеции и Имперского колледжа Лондона. К своему исследованию авторы привлекли 23 мужчины, проходящих гормональную терапию. В результате им удалось отделить элементы иммунной системы, которые регулируются исключительно половыми гормонами. Также они нашли элементы иммунитета, которые заложены в генетике.
Как сообщают авторы работы в журнале Nature, повышенный уровень тестостерона (мужского гормона) и сниженный уровень эстрогена изменяют баланс между двумя важнейшими иммунными сигнальными системами. От этих систем напрямую зависит то, как иммунитет реагирует на инфекции и заболевания. Речь идет о противовирусном интерфероне типа 1 (IFN-1) и провоспалительных сигналах, таких, как фактор некроза опухоли альфа (TNF-α).
Проще говоря, решающее значение для иммунитета имеет содержание гормонов в организме, а не генетика. От них зависят различия в риске инфекций, аутоиммунных заболеваний, и даже рака среди мужчин и женщин (теоретически иммунитет способен эффективно бороться с онкологическими заболеваниями). По мнению самих авторов исследования, полученные знания не только влияют на понимание того, как одни и те же болезни влияют на мужчин и женщин, но также позволят разработать новые, более эффективные методы лечения аутоиммунных и онкологических заболеваний.
