Рекордсмен по глубине места обитания был открыт в 2010 году, внутри одной из самых глубоких пещер в мире — Крубера-Воронья (Абхазия). Само пещерное образование имеет глубину в 2191 метр. При помощи приманки в виде обыкновенного куска сыра, удивительные создания были подняты наверх с глубины 1980 метров. В ходе их изучения, исследователи пришли к выводу, что они питаются грибками и всякими разложениями.

Самые глубоко живущие черви
Однако, в других источниках говорится, что самыми глубоко живущими подземными созданиями являются дьявольские черви (Halicephalobus mephisto). Речь идет о круглых червях, длина тела которых тоже не превышает нескольких миллиметров.
Эти подземные создания были впервые встречены в 2011 году, во время работ в шахтах по добыче золота в Южно-Африканской республике. Максимальная глубина, на которой их нашли, составляла 3 600 метров. Они обитали в небольших лужицах, вода в которых была нагрета до 48 градусов Цельсия. Анализ показал, что этим подземным водам до 12 тысяч лет. По словам шахтеров, они сильно перепугались, увидев в скоплениях воды что-то черное, маленькое и шустрое.

Как можно понять, дьявольские черви являются экстремофилами — организмами, которые могут жить в экстремальных условиях. Они выживают не только в горячей воде, но и в жидкости с минимальным содержанием кислорода. В ходе наблюдений было выяснено, что они размножаются бесполым путем и питаются подземными бактериями.
Открытие дьявольских червей было очень важным научным достижением. Дело в том, что ранее никто и никогда не видел, чтобы многоклеточные организмы жили на глубине более 2 километров. Бактерии могут обитать и поглубже, но в рамках этой статьи нас интересовали только сложные организмы.

Почти у всех организмов, которые живут на больших глубинах, отсутствуют глаза. На их головах могут быть точки, похожие на органы зрения, однако они не выполняют никакой полезной функции. Это связано с тем, что на больших глубинах нет солнечного света, и глаза этим созданиям попросту не нужны. Также такого рода животные почти лишены окраски и являются либо белыми, либо обладают прозрачными телами.
