В 1973 году самолет сбил птицу на рекордной высоте
К сожалению, этого нельзя было сказать о столкнувшейся с самолетом птице. Все, что от нее осталось, это пара десятков перьев. Благодаря им, специалистам по птицам (орнитологам) удалось распознать вид пернатого создания. Оказалось, что на высоту более 11 000 метров смог подняться африканский сип (Gyps rueppellii), также известный как гриф Рюппеля.

Африканские птицы питающиеся падалью
Африканские сипы — это хищные птицы, которые в больших количествах обитают в саваннах Африки. Если говорить точнее, они уже давно облюбовали регион Сахель, располагающийся между пустыней Сахара и покрытой травяной растительностью территорией республики Судан.
Длина тела африканских сипов достигает 85 сантиметров, а масса их тела может достигать 5 килограммов. То есть, это довольно крупные птицы, которые уверенно себя чувствуют рядом со многими животными. Размах их крыльев достигает 2 метров, и когда они поправляют перья, это довольно тревожное зрелище: а вдруг этот хищник внезапно нападет и начнет бить своими мощными перьями?

На самом деле, грифы Рюппеля первыми не нападают. Они являются падальщиками, то есть питаются мясом уже умерших животных. Поэтому они обитают в местах, где много копытных животных вроде жирафов. Африканские сипы живут группами, предпочитая скалистые уступы. Обычно в одной колонии обитает от 10 до 1000 особей, то есть это действительно семейные животные. Они образуют пары на всю жизнь — когда самка открывает в гнездо пару яиц, из них вылупляются птенцы, за которыми ухаживают оба родителя.
Несмотря на многообразие популяций, на сегодняшний день в мире осталось всего лишь около 22 000 особей этого вида грифов. Они находятся на грани полного вымирания потому, что люди уничтожают места их обитания, а также им не хватает падали. К тому же, многие особи умерли от отравления карбофураном — это мощное средство от насекомых, которое смертельно для грифов Рюппеля.
Также многие африканские сипы умерли от диклофенака. Это лекарства активно используется в ветеринарии для лечения воспалений у животных. Падальщики вроде грифов питались мясом лечившихся этим средством животных и умирали от отравления ядовитым для них веществом.

Какие птицы высоко летают
В конечном итоге получается, что максимальная высота полетов птиц составляет 11 300 метров. Но ученые считают, что это был единичный случай, потому что птицы не могут долго находиться на такой высоте из-за малого количества кислорода.
Если исключить африканских сипов, рекордсменами по высоте полета можно назвать серых журавлей (Grus grus), которые в случае опасности могут подниматься на 10 000 метров. Также стоит упомянуть горных гусей (Anser indicus), которые были замечены на высоте 7 300 метров.
